🌎 Happy World Environment Day! 🌎

Florida is home to an incredible diversity of habitats, including springs, rivers, forests, prairies, beaches, and mangrove wetlands. These landscapes support countless species of wildlife and help make our state one of the most biologically diverse places in the country.

Today is a reminder that the future of wild Florida depends on all of us. Protecting wildlife habitat, clean water, and the places we love takes collective action.

If you’d like to help keep Florida wild for future generations, please consider making a donation to support our work.

🐱🐻🦃 These are just a few of the faces that benefit from wildlife crossings.

Wildlife crossings help reconnect habitats, reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions, and give animals safer pathways across Florida’s growing network of roads.

That’s why we partnered with Dr. Daniel Smith to create The Practitioner’s Guide to Planning and Design of Wildlife Crossings in Florida, a resource built to help turn science and collaboration into real conservation solutions.

Protecting wild Florida takes all of us, and every crossing built is a step toward a more connected future.

Today the Florida legislature passed the 2026-2027 budget with NO new dollars for Florida Forever. Sarah Gledhill, FWF President and CEO shares this:

“Florida loses hundreds of thousands of acres to development every decade. The lands and waters that remain are where the Florida panther hangs on, where we escape to hike true wilderness, where we cast our lines, and where we pass a love of the outdoors to the next generation of Floridians. These wild spaces aren't just beautiful. They're irreplaceable.

Florida Forever was built on this understanding. Yet today, the Legislature budgeted no new dollars for it, despite various claims of adequate funding for land conservation.

And to make matters worse, swept existing Florida Forever funds into another program entirely.

Let's be clear: FWF supports the Rural and Family Lands Protection Program (RFLPP). Florida's working farms and ranches deserve protection. RFLPP protects working Florida, while Florida Forever protects wild Florida. One cannot substitute for the other, and every Floridian who depends on healthy habitat and clean water pays the price when we pretend otherwise.

Raiding Florida Forever to fund it isn't balance. It's a false choice.

These programs were never meant to compete. They were designed to work together, but somewhere along the way that understanding got lost.

For 90 years, FWF has stood for Florida's wild spaces alongside every Floridian who believes this state's future is worth fighting for. We've seen political headwinds before. But abandoning Florida Forever while turning conservation allies into budget rivals isn't fiscal responsibility. This is a betrayal of the bipartisan conservation legacy Floridians have united behind and voted for, time and again.

We're not done. We'll be where we've always been: advocating alongside our partners, our supporters, and every Floridian who refuses to give up on wild Florida. Thank you for not giving up.”

Today the Port Everglades fight begins on a new front.

We've joined partners to formally warn federal agencies they're violating the Endangered Species Act in the Port Everglades Sand Bypass Project. Sediment plumes are larger than predicted, threatening staghorn coral and queen conch at the worst possible moment.

Staghorn coral was declared functionally extinct in Florida in 2025, yet some of its only known survivors are hanging on right next to Port Everglades. Florida's Coral Reef generates $675M in coastal protection annually and sustains hundreds of species.

When agencies fall short of their legal obligations, we fight back.

Digital comms might have changed over the years, but one thing hasn’t: gopher tortoises are still out here playing a critical role as a keystone species… and still looking for love 🐢💘

While males roam between burrows head bobbing and competing for mates during spring mating season, their burrows continue providing shelter for hundreds of other species across Florida’s uplands.

Ecosystem engineer. Hopeless romantic.
