We conclude our pastor appreciation month with a picture of Pastor Jessica. We are blessed she answered the call to serve here. We wanted to show our love and appreciation by making her smile with her hometown team. She knows she is in Bills territory but as she says, "you can take the girl out of Massachusetts, but you can't take Massachusetts out of the girl." Thank you, Pastor Jessica, for all you do!

October 24, 1826: Ann Hasseltine Judson, one of the first American overseas missionaries, died of smallpox in Burma at age 37. She was a teacher from graduation until her marriage to Adoniram Judson in 1812. During the first Anglo-Burmese war (1824–26), Adoniram was imprisoned for 17 months under suspicion of being an English spy, and Ann moved into a shack outside the prison gates so as to support her husband. She lobbied vigorously for months to convince the authorities to release her husband and his fellow prisoners, but her efforts were unsuccessful. She also sent food and sleeping mats to the prisoners to help their time in prison to be more bearable. After Adoniram's release they both remained in Burma to continue their work. Ann wrote a catechism in Burmese, and translated the books of Daniel and Jonah into Burmese. She was the first Protestant to translate any of the scriptures into Thai when in 1819 she translated the Gospel of Matthew. ABHS has her letters from Burma and the books she translated in the archives as well as books about her and her work.

From his recent Biennial “State of the Region” report, Executive Minister Rev Jerrod H Hugenot concluded,

“The best time to plant a tree, the old proverb goes, was 20 years ago. We could lament about what might seem like a lean time based on attendance, building physical resources, and cashflow, the things we let ourselves too often use as the definition of success…

Or, we could relearn how to plant, to tend patiently and intentionally the grove of
new leaders God has already began begun seeding in: our churches, our outreach ministries, our American Baptist youth convention attendees, and everywhere else that God can be found working in the midst of this world to help us learn how to spread and share the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Today, let us know we talk about the state of the region in 2026, but let us not misunderstand, this is all about being in the place we want to be in 2046.

Will you join me in this sacred work?
