The Alexia is pleased to announce that WHITNEY JOHNSON LATORRE will serve as moderator at The Alexia’s 2026 live judging weekend March 27–28 in Syracuse, New York.

For more than two decades, Whitney Johnson Latorre has led teams and organizations through moments of transformation.

As President and CEO of the Catalina Island Conservancy, Latorre set a new strategic vision for the 42,000-acre private land trust, elevating Catalina as a global model for 21st century conservation. Bringing together a diverse slate of stakeholders—from researchers to philanthropists to public-school students—she launched one of the most ambitious conservation efforts in California’s history, all while the federal government pulled back from protection efforts.

Before stewarding Catalina through this period of extraordinary change, Latorre guided storied legacy brands navigating a rapidly shifting media landscape. As vice president of visual and immersive experiences at National Geographic, she led a team of photographers and videographers using augmented reality to document landscapes from the top of Mount Everest to the surface of Mars—harnessing new technologies to reach untapped audiences. Prior to that, she championed innovative visual storytelling at The New Yorker, reimagining the possibilities for photojournalism during the rise of digital media and intense industry disruption.

A trusted expert in her field, Latorre writes and speaks on leadership, storytelling, and conservation.

The Alexia is pleased to announce a new collaboration with the Festival of Ethical Photography, an international effort based in Lodi, Italy, and dedicated to socially conscious visual storytelling and its power to inspire meaningful change.

United by a shared mission, both organizations believe in photography’s ability to generate real social impact and to support those who, often at great personal risk, document stories that might otherwise go unseen.

As part of this partnership, The Alexia will present two special prizes to finalists of the World Report Award | Documenting Humanity, selected from the Spotlight Award and Student Award categories. The prizes, valued at €1,000 and €500, will recognize completed projects that would benefit from additional support to deepen coverage of important global issues.

The festival will produce exhibitions of The Alexia award recipients, to be displayed alongside the other 2026 contest winners.

This collaboration marks an important step in our continuing outreach to the global community in an effort to strengthen support worldwide for ethical documentary photography that informs, fosters understanding and inspires meaningful change.

We encourage you to learn more about and to enter their competition, please visit https://www.festivaldellafotografiaetica.it/home-2022-en/.

We are grateful for our partnership with the Festival of Ethical Photography and for their support of documentary photographers worldwide.

The Alexia is pleased to announce the selection of STACY GOLD as The Alexia 2026 Archive Fellow.

Launched in 2023, The Alexia Fellows initiative provides accomplished visual storytelling professionals the opportunity and support to reflect, research and develop skills while producing a project of significance.

The initiative is made possible through the generous support of one of The Alexia’s first student grant recipients, Xin Liu (1993)—now co-founder and president of The Enlight Foundation—in honor of The Alexia’s founding director, David Sutherland, and his wife, Pei Lin Huang.

During the fellowship, Stacy will gather, organize and activate The Alexia Archive, a repository of images, projects and visual storytellers recognized over the past 35 years. The goal is to maximize the collection’s potential for use in exhibitions, publications and educational efforts.

The Alexia is pleased to offer two conservation pop-up grants this year (one for professionals and one for students):

THE ALEXIA CONSERVATION GRANT SPONSORED BY THE FSTOP FOUNDATION — $5,000 for professionals, $1,000 for students: For this grant, we will be looking for strong projects that focus on positive aspects of conservation work in relation to human-wildlife conflict — how we can thrive living alongside wildlife that share our landscape.

MORE GOOD NEWS: All proposals are automatically considered for the Vision Grant. For this and any other pop-up grant, you do not need to apply separately. During the submission process, you will have the opportunity to indicate whether your proposal should also be considered for any of this year’s other grants.

Only one application per person will be accepted each year.

The submission fee is $50 for professionals; student submissions are free. (Limited fee waivers are available for members of our partner organizations who cannot afford to pay the fee. Member organizations are listed at the bottom of the Rules page.)

We’re looking forward to seeing your proposals!
