The Lake Ontario buoys at Oak Orchard, Oswego, and Sodus Point are officially deployed and actively transmitting data for the season! πŸ†

While seeing data online is super easy, getting these buoys in the water takes months of preparation and a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes! From troubleshooting unexpected equipment issues to working through wind, waves, and cold spring conditions, deployment days are anything but easy. Big shoutout to the UFI buoy team for their dedication to sharing lake data!

You can explore all three buoy stations and access near real-time data through our website: https://www.upstatefreshwater.org/data/lake-ontario

Here's to another successful buoy season on Lake Ontario!🌊

This past weekend, staff from UFI attended the annual New York State Federation of Lake Associations, Inc. (NYSFOLA) conference in Lake George!

The conference brought together people from across the region who are passionate about protecting and managing our lakes and watersheds.

During the conference:
πŸ’§Andrew Brainard presented on watershed modeling and climate change impacts on best management practices
πŸ’§Monica Caves shared ideas for effective science communication in lake communities
πŸ’§ Gina Kehoe helped train CSLAP volunteers to prepare for another great monitoring season

It was great connecting with so many dedicated lake stewards! We're already looking forward to next year!

We celebrated Earth Day this week with our annual street cleanup! ♻️

Our staff collected 10 bags of litter from our office's street, making a big difference in just a short amount of time. This year we had a lot of typical street litter, but we also found steel-toe work boots, reading glasses, and winter gloves! Almost enough for a whole new outfit... πŸ₯ΎπŸ‘“πŸ§€

Thanks to the UFI team for pitching in and helping keep litter out of our environment! 🌏

The Onondaga Lake buoy is officially back in the water for the season!

Our team recently deployed the buoy, which collects data on lake conditions such as temperature and dissolved oxygen. These data help us better understand what's happening below the surface and provide highly localized weather information. 🌊
