Work continues repairing headstones. This is the grave of Pvt. Perry Bazemore (1846-1884). He served in the 5th GA Cavalry Co. F “Screven Troop” according to widow pension records . His headstone was broken in 4 pieces and the base had to be leveled. Sitting in the dirt for years caused deterioration, but after a cleaning, it will be exciting to read the stone better.

Yesterday, members of Camp 549 cleaned the beautiful Enecks Family Cemetery. Aside from the Enecks men who served in Georgia and SC units, Major Joseph Shaw of the 4th Tenn Cavalry is buried there after being mortally wounded fighting Kilpatrick’s cavalry during Sherman’s March. The Enecks family nursed him and buried him in their family plot. As the stone reads, “he gave up his life for the great cause of civil liberty.” 🫡

Though fiction, Scarlet was an O’Hara in “Gone with the Wind.”

Seemingly everything possible has already been written about the climactic battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania—three nightmarish days of intense combat in early July 1863—that determined America’s destiny. Consequently, for people craving something new beyond the standard narrative so often rep...

Attacking the Righteous Cause Myth
Step 1: Anti-Slavery = Anti-black; Free State = Black-Free

The primary source record is clear. A main reason 19th century Southerners were forced to defend slavery as a practical matter was the absolute unwillingness of the North to allow dispersion and integration of the freed people across the Union and its territories. A chronic Northern racism was inten...

A history of the Republican Party by Prof. Clyde Wilson

From the 2005 Abbeville Institute Summer School. When John C. Calhoun spoke of slavery as “the peculiar institution,” he didn’t mean to say that there was anything peculiar about slavery, as it has been interpreted since. He only meant to say that slavery was peculiar to the Southern States in...

The ever-widening chasm that separates the North and the South today has a long history with many fissures, but one would hardly consider the celebration of Christmas to be one of them. However, in the years prior to the founding of America’s first English colonies in Virginia and Massachusetts, C...

Amid the steady stream of horrible economic news this week you might have missed a rather bland headline from the Associated Press: “Panel advises removal of Confederate statue at Arlington.” The news itself, that an independent commission charged with renaming U.S. military bases with Confedera...
