Thank you to our friends at the City of Deerfield Beach for celebrating leadership, service, and inclusion! 💙

Lighthouse of Broward is proud to celebrate our Vice President of Public Affairs & Government Relations, Jose Lopez-Masso, who received a Certificate of Recognition following his selection as an honoree in the Florida Panthers’ Celebration of Hispanic Excellence.

In the recognition, Mayor Todd Drosky highlighted the impact of Jose’s work through Lighthouse: “Your service through Lighthouse of Broward helps others achieve independence, confidence, and opportunity.”
These words reflect the mission at the heart of Lighthouse. For more than 52 years, we have provided free programs and services that empower people who are blind or visually impaired to live independently and pursue their goals.

Our heartfelt thanks to Mayor Drosky and the City Commissioners for honoring Jose’s leadership and recognizing the difference Lighthouse makes in our community. Together, we help create a future filled with opportunity for everyone!

🗳️ Because every voice deserves to be heard.

On October 9, Lighthouse of Broward hosted our 2nd Electoral Forum at the Village Civic Center in Sunrise, bringing together more than 75 blind and visually impaired voters and over 12 candidates, with an additional candidate joining virtually.

Candidates for U.S. Congress, the Florida Legislature, city commissions, school board, and judicial seats had the opportunity to speak directly with our community about the issues that matter.

One of the highlights? 👏 The Broward County Supervisor of Elections Office demonstrated accessible voting equipment, giving participants hands-on experience with tools designed to help them cast their ballots independently and confidently.
Accessibility doesn’t stop at buildings, websites, or transportation. It includes the ballot box.
People with disabilities deserve equal access to elections, candidates, information, and every opportunity to help shape the communities they call home.

💜 Thank you to every candidate, participant, election official, and community member who helped make this important conversation possible.

Your vote matters. Your voice matters. YOU matter. 🗳️

Exciting news for seniors in our community! Lighthouse of Broward has received a $350,000 appropriation from the Florida Legislature to support our services for seniors who are blind or visually impaired. 🦯

Senator Dr. Barbara Sharief and Representative Chip LaMarca presented the check as the legislative sponsors of our appropriation request. These two extraordinary champions supported our request from beginning to end, advocating with their fellow legislators for the importance of Lighthouse’s work and the needs of the seniors we serve.

During their visit, our distinguished guests toured the progress on our first-floor renovations and spent time with clients enjoying a social activity. President and CEO Ellyn Drotzer and Board President Tim Moffatt welcomed them alongside members of our Board of Directors, leadership team, and staff.

“We are going to serve more seniors than ever before,” said Ellyn Drotzer.

“Thank you, Senator Sharief and Representative LaMarca, for helping more seniors access the tools, training, and support they need to live with independence and confidence!”

To our Lighthouse friends and supporters: On October 7, the City of Coral Springs presented Lighthouse of Broward with a proclamation recognizing White Cane Safety Day! 🦯🙌🏼

The white cane is a symbol of independence and an essential tool for people who are blind or visually impaired. This recognition helps raise awareness about pedestrian safety, accessibility, and everyone’s right to move through our community with confidence.

Our heartfelt thanks to the Mayor and City Commissioners for this meaningful recognition and their support of a more inclusive community.

Representing Lighthouse at the commission meeting were President & CEO Ellyn Drotzer; board members Tim Moffatt, Carmen Miller, Erica Rickets, Maria Pierson, Rachel Zamora, and Eileen O’Connor; Jose Lopez-Masso, VP of Public Affairs & Government Relations; and development staff Tranique Merritt and Karen Mitchell.💜

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate independence, inclusion, and the power of community!

👁️💜 October is Blindness Awareness Month, and awareness starts with understanding.

Blindness and visual impairment do not define a person’s potential, independence, creativity, or future.

At Lighthouse of Broward, we are proud to empower children, teens, adults, and families with the tools, training, confidence, and support needed to navigate life with greater independence.

This month, we’re inviting our community to do more than simply recognize blindness, learn, listen, advocate, and help create a world that is more accessible and inclusive for everyone.
