Fort Lauderdale's oldest surviving building started out as a riverside trading post where Seminole families paddled up in dugout canoes. 🛶

Frank Stranahan came to the New River in 1893 to run a ferry and overnight camp on the stage line between Lantana and Lemon City. Before long he opened a trading post, and Seminole families traveled from the Everglades to trade alligator hides, otter pelts and egret plumes for cloth, coffee, tools and other goods.

In 1900 he married Ivy Cromartie, the area's first schoolteacher. 📚 Ivy built a lasting friendship with the Seminole families who came to the post and taught many of their children to read, at a time when few others in the area made that effort.

The two-story house they built in 1901 still stands on the New River today as the Stranahan House museum, surrounded by the high-rises of modern Fort Lauderdale. Old photographs of canoes tied up at the landing look like they came from a completely different world.

Hey! With all the new construction, let's protect something really, really old and honor the Tequesta, soldiers & sailors, and early City fathers! Connect with and conserve the history of Fort Lauderdale, which had a significant start on the beach.

On October 5th the Historic Preservation Board will consider Archaeological Site Designation of the Property Commonly Known as the Third Fort Lauderdale Site Located at 640 Seabreeze Boulevard (Fort Lauderdale Beach Park at Bahia Mar).

Prehistoric and historic archaeological deposits, artifacts, and features associated with the indigenous Tequesta culture and subsequent historic occupations – particularly from the 1830s through the 1940s - occur within the Fort Lauderdale Beach Park parcels.

This site encompasses evidence of the prehistoric use and occupation of Fort Lauderdale beach by the Tequesta, as well as the remains of the only known location of the three military outposts known as “Fort Lauderdale” for which the city is named.
