On this day 94 years ago, the Waynesboro News-Virginian announced that Amelia Earhart had successfully flown across the Atlantic Ocean. The top headline of the paper that day read: "Woman Flier Conquers Atlantic Ocean."
She had to cut her flight short because her exhaust manifold had burned out and her gasoline gauge was broken. She safely landed in Ireland.
While this was not her first time crossing the Atlantic Ocean, it was the first solo transatlantic flight by a woman.

McCray impresses at Spring Meeting
Historian and author (and former ACHS Board member) Mike McCray wowed a crowd of about 90 folks (and an additional 30+ on line) on Sunday at the historical Society Spring Meeting.

Mike, who has recently authored a book about U.S. Rt. 11, took the audience on a tour of Rt. 11 from Lake Champlain in NY to Lake Pontchartrain in LA. His books were for sale and a long line of customers snaked across the room to buy the book and get it personally autographed.

The program was held at the Verona Volunteer Fire Department -- a first for ACHS. At the beginning of the program, we were treated to a short history of the community-built fire department. The history was presented by Andrew D., an Augusta County Firefighter and a member of the Verona VFD.

This Mother's Day, we want to spotlight a mother you might not know is from Augusta County.
Ida Stover — and she was born in Mount Sidney in 1862.
You may not recognize her name, but you almost certainly know her son: Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander in World War II and 34th President of the United States.
Ida grew up in the Shenandoah Valley as the daughter of a German immigrant family. She was born during the Civil War. Despite the limited opportunities available to women of her time, she pursued her own education and was known as bright, witty, and deeply principled.
She raised seven sons, instilling in them values of hard work, faith, and personal responsibility.

Happy Mother's Day!
