Blue Max Blue Max promotes Leather-Levi traditions throughout the Greater St. Blue Max Cycle Club is a levi-leather club in St. Louis, Missouri. Louis, Illinois. Louis.

Louis area and offers educational, social, and charitable activities serving the LGBT+ community. Blue Max promotes brotherhood and sisterhood in the leather community while assisting charitable organizations. The club was founded in 1975 by a group led by Jerry Wickham and later reorganized by Bob Garrett. The original home bar was the Red Bull in East St. In 1978 the home bar was the Mine Shaft (downstairs at Faces in East St. Louis) followed by Clementines in St. Louis in 1980 and the Outpost, in St. Louis (later the upstairs bar was called the St. Louis Eagle) in 1993 (The Outpost/Eagle closed in December 1999 but reopened six months later under new management as the Eagle in Exile.) JJ's Clubhouse, located in the Grove Neighborhood of Saint Louis, has been our home bar since 2000. In the early years, Blue Max joined other clubs in holding joint runs. Those clubs included Gateway M.C., Spirits of St. Louis, and Bacchus. Gateway is the only other surviving leather club in St. In mid-1982, each club began holding individual runs. In 1992, Blue Max became the first St. Louis leather club to admit women. Blue Max has always been committed to charitable causes. The club holds annual holiday food drives, and holds numerous fundraisers that assist families affected by HIV/AIDS. Blue Max sponsors club nights and events monthly and actively works with other St. Louis LGBT organizations, bars, and venues to promote the leather community. 🔙 THROWBACK THURSDAY — ON THE ROAD WITH BLUE MAX!

For this week’s Throwback Thursday, we’re heading back to March 2016, when members of Blue Max Cycle Club hit the road and traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, to support our friends with the Conductors at their annual Run.

Back then, the Conductors Run was still a traditional hotel run, bringing together club members and friends from across the region for a weekend of fun, friendship, and community.

Trips like this have always been an important part of the Blue Max experience. Getting out on the road, visiting our fellow clubs, supporting their events, and building friendships that extend well beyond St. Louis are all part of what makes our club community special.

Throwback Thursday - Blue Max History

This week, we’re reaching back into the Blue Max archives for another great piece of our club’s history.

The denim, leather, club colors, patches, pins, and even the four-legged friend dressed for the occasion make this photo a wonderful snapshot of an earlier era of Blue Max. ❤️

Photos like this remind us that Blue Max is more than the events we attend or the colors we wear. It’s the friendships, personalities, traditions, and memories created by generations of members who helped make the club what it is today.

More than 50 years of history means there are a LOT of stories behind these old photographs, and we love being able to share them.

The Blue Max Cycle Club is incredibly proud to congratulate Argos on earning the title of Mr. Missouri Leather 2026!

Argos is a Full Member of Rudis Leather Society and an Associate Member of the Blue Max , and we could not be happier to see a member of our extended Blue Max family achieve this incredible milestone.

On behalf of the entire Blue Max membership, congratulations, Argos! We are very proud of you and this tremendous accomplishment. We know you will represent St. Louis, the State of Missouri, and our Leather community with pride, integrity, and heart as you carry the Mr. Missouri Leather title forward.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: BLACK AND BLUE IN THE LOU!

This week’s Throwback Thursday takes us back to September 18–20, 2015, when Blue Max Cycle Club celebrated an incredible milestone: 40 years of Leather, friendship, and community in St. Louis!

Our 40th Anniversary Run, “Black and Blue in the Lou,” brought together Blue Max members, friends, and members of the Leather community to celebrate four decades of Blue Max history.

And what better place to celebrate than JJ’s Clubhouse, our longtime home bar.

JJ’s opened in 2000 and became an important gathering place for St. Louis’ Leather and LGBTQ+ communities. It was home to Blue Max for more than two decades and was closely connected with other parts of St. Louis Leather history, including Gateway M.C. and the Mr. Missouri Leather contest. JJ’s remained Blue Max’s home bar until the venue closed in 2021.

For many of us, JJ’s was more than just a bar. It was a place where we gathered, held meetings, celebrated, raised money, welcomed visitors, and created countless memories together.
Looking at this photo now is a reminder of two pieces of St. Louis Leather history at once: Blue Max celebrating its 40th Anniversary and JJ’s Clubhouse serving as the backdrop for so many moments in our community.
