Some of my favorite shows over the years? Follies was a standout musical. But I go for the serious stuff. So – Arcadia, History Boys, Gross Indecency, Angels in America, August: Osage County, I Am My Own Wife, and The Brothers Size. There are a lot more. Some in the studio from way back when – one was called The Living about the plague – like I said, I like the dark stuff. There is some really meaty stuff that The Rep has done. And The Brothers Size has carried on that tradition. Also Primary Trust I thought was wonderful, too. It had such a good message, but it was also sad, poignant. I like shows that are going to have me thinking about it years later.

Attendance is the biggest thing that the pandemic affected. Getting the audience back is still the most important thing. And that’s why we all want to get out there and get people to remember that there is this live theatre here. Because they’re now comfortable at home watching Netflix, and I understand that – I am too. And it’s not it’s like an unusual situation here in St. Louis, it’s all over the country. But I think moving forward, this present leadership has done a great job of trying to read the audience and bring in things that the audience wants. And I have heard so many people come in, as a greeter, who have said “The Rep is back”, and that is just a great feeling.

I think The Rep is going in the right direction. I’m thrilled. As I said, I like the more serious shows, but I’m probably not in the majority – more people want to be entertained and The Rep is doing that, and I appreciate that. I appreciate what they are doing. And I’ll keep going, because I know whatever they do is going to be good. And the studio this past year is so different from anything they’ve ever done before, and look how successful it was! So, you know, I’m going to show up. (3/3)

You have no idea what kind of an impression theatre has on people. We had a wonderful docent program where we would go into schools who were planning to come to the student matinees to give them some background material – a rundown of what the show was about, and some interesting things to look for on the set – so they would be more engaged.

At one time there were 30 docents who would go all over the city and county. I used to go to Perryville to see this teacher – she brought her kids two or three times a year from Perryville. That was sort of her condition for employment – that she was going to get a bus and take her kids to St. Louis to see theatre. And it’s because as a kid, she grew up on a farm in Illinois, and she came to student matinees at The Rep. So, it makes a huge impression, even if you don’t realize it at the time. (2/3)

A lot of people think that volunteering is just two things – ushering and stuffing envelopes. We do so much more than that.

We make thank you phone calls for development, help with Opening Night pre-show cocktails, stuffing envelopes, a couple of us were extras in a couple of plays, picking up actors, directors and designers from the airport. We write welcome notes that we put in every basket for the artists who come to visit St. Louis.

I cooked cast dinners for Steve. He would have the cast over after First Rehearsal, so I got to meet a lot of people that way. Steve had an apartment that sort of lent itself to that. He had these theatre pictures from The Rep all over the walls, up and down the halls and all in the living room, and people would walk around and say “oh, I worked with that person in Arizona” and “I worked with that person in Utah”, they all knew people in those photos from having worked with them all over the country. Those cast dinners were really fun.

I would make a home cooked meal. Literally things that I would make at home. It could be anywhere from 12-30 people, and I had a couple of volunteers who would help me. The hardest part was that Steve lived in a building that had a 100 year old elevator with accordion doors. So someone would have to hold the doors open while someone else shoved all the boxes of food in. And then Hana let me do them at my house. But then there was COVID. It was fun and the actors loved it. They loved visiting with each other in a more relaxed setting. And home cooked food, I found, it doesn’t have to be all that good – it just has to be home cooked.
