This season, our new flower tunnel at our Midtown Community Garden is bursting with color! Even in its first year, this tunnel has quickly become one of our favorite spots to be. Bouquets can be found at MaMa Jean's Natural Market and our new Cherry St. Market on Sundays!

We met with Farmer Dan from Compost Collective KC back in early spring and had an amazing time touring their facility and learning about the farm.

Compost Collective KC was the first of it’s kind in Kansas City. They pick up your food waste curbside, haul it back to Urbavore Farm, their urban farm, and turn it back into gourmet fruits and vegetables that they sell to their community.

They’re a true closed loop system where nothing is wasted and everything gained. 🌿

Kansas City is so lucky to have them so if you’re in the area check out all they have to offer and support your local growers and composters!

Have you ever wondered what those white fabric covers are doing in the garden?

They’re called floating row covers, and they’re one of the simple tools we use to help grow healthy crops like cabbage. They act like a lightweight protective blanket for plants. They help shield young crops from insect pests, reduce weather stress, and create a slightly warmer growing environment that encourages strong growth. For crops like cabbage, this extra protection can make a big difference in plant health and harvest quality while growing without chemicals.

This raised herb bed at our Midtown Community Garden is a perfect example of how color, texture, and thoughtful layering can transform a small space into something extraordinary. You don’t need acres of land to create a beautiful tea or herb garden. Sometimes all it takes is a single raised bed filled with plants that work together and bring you joy!

Elderflowers are in bloom here in the Ozarks! These large clusters of white flowers are the reproductive structures of the elder plant. If pollinated successfully, each tiny flower has the potential to develop into an elderberry later in the season.

This creates an interesting choice for farmers and foragers. Harvesting flower clusters now means fewer berries later. Elderflowers have a long history of culinary use and can be used to make teas, syrups, cordials, jellies, and even elderflower fritters. The antioxidant rich berries, on the other hand, are commonly used in syrups, jams, and wines. We love seeing our pollinators enjoying them for now!

Nasturtiums are one of the hardest-working plants in our gardens. Their bright orange, yellow, and red blooms attract pollinators, help support beneficial insects, they’re also completely edible! Both the leaves and flowers have a peppery flavor similar to arugula or watercress, making them a favorite among chefs. We love adding flowers to salads, desserts, charcuterie boards, and more.

Springfield Community Gardens currently has beautiful nasturtium flowers available. Local chefs, caterers, and food professionals interested in incorporating fresh edible flowers into their menus are encouraged to reach out to learn about availability to [email protected]
