Tomorrow 9/1 isn’t just a Professional Development day, it’s also Election Day.

The Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA), of which the Springfield Education Association (SEA) is an affiliate, has an endorsement process it follows ahead of elections.

These are the candidates running who have received endorsement by the MTA and at least a part of Springfield is in the district they are running for.

Jeromie Whalen - Candidate for 1st Congressional District
Ed Markey - Candidate for U.S. Senate
Johnnie McKnight - Candidate for 11th Hampden District
Michael Lachenmeyer - Candidate for 12th Hampden District

What’s happening in the SEA during the week of 8.31 to 9.4?

The first Legislative Board meeting of the new school year is happening at the Springfield Central High School library and on Zoom.

The SEA LBoard is composed of all elected building representatives and is responsible for voting to adopt or amend policy and the budget of the SEA. LBoard is also a major communication hub for building reps to share and receive support on issues affecting members in their buildings.

All members are welcome to observe meetings of the Legislative Board.

Two Springfield schools are partnering with a for-profit company (called “Alpha Schools”) which intends to test an AI-generated instructional model on our children this school year.

Educators, families, community members, and allies have expressed concerns about the potential harm that such a program could have.

The National Education Association is the largest union in the United States, representing 3,000,000 educators and public school staff across all 50 states.

The Springfield Education Association sends representatives, elected by our membership, to be a part of the Massachusetts Delegation at the annual Representative Assembly.

Our delegates have been passionately speaking and organizing this week to influence the agenda of the National Education Association to make the organization one that fights for ALL WORKING PEOPLE. We are not free until everyone is free.

Tools 4 Teaching will be open on June 18th from 3:00 to 5:30 pm. This will be the last chance to get free classroom resources from Tools 4 Teaching for the school year.

Tools 4 Teaching will reopen on August 20th in preparation for the next school year!

Over 150 educators and community members gathered for the Springfield Education Association’s end of the year celebration.

The Springfield Education Association had the pleasure of awarding our Joan Cormack and Meline Kasparian Scholarships to a set of very deserving awardees.

In addition, we shared some stories of success from this school year.

Our political education committee has been regularly sending members to school committee and interacting with local and state officials.

Our immigration committee continues to work tirelessly to build a support network across our schools.

Members of our organizing committee have been working alongside low-incidence educators to secure grant funding to support the work they do in their classrooms.

Pre-K educators throughout the district have coordinated their efforts to defend the victories in our contract.

Members organized a conference to highlight the work we’ve done to advance racial equity.

And so much more.

Through our collective action this year we’ve been able to demonstrate our capacity to work on multiple fronts, with no signs of slowing down. The work continues to build a Springfield and a society which prioritizes the schools that our students deserve.
