40-Year Anniversary of Lafayette in Haiti

https://htlafayette.funraise.org/

Dear Lafayette Friends,

I recall with deep fondness the wonderful years I spent at Lafayette College – it’s hard to imagine that 40 years have passed since we launched the Hands Together Haiti program on campus. And while I am saddened about the current violence that has closed roads and airports here in Port-au-Prince preventing my return to the U.S. for Easter, I am also hopeful and proud about the bonds that tie Lafayette and Haitian communities together. We overcame similar challenges when we unknowingly had our first Lafayette student visit in 1986 during a violent uprising against Haitian President Baby Doc Duvalier.

I am proud and touched by our many accomplishments, and thankful to our Executive Director, Doug Campbell (Lafayette ‘86), who has been at my side since the start. What began as a small, hopeful project helping a l***r clinic has grown into a compassionate charity aiding the poorest people in the world. We have drilled more than 650 potable water wells, bringing clean water to 750,000 underserved people; we feed more than 25,000 individuals daily and teach 11,000 students in eleven schools.

But our work is far from over. Ongoing political instability, gang violence, natural disasters, and dwindling foreign aid continue to plague the country and devastate its residents. While the Haitian people embody a remarkable spirit of hope—one that has endured through centuries of challenges—they need our help.

Please help us keep things going in Haiti if you can. Some of your classmates created HT’s Leopard 40 Fund (https://htlafayette.funraise.org/) to humbly seek your gift to help us provide housing, education, and nutrition to the most forgotten and poorest people in the world. My prayer is that you remember fondly those days we shared at Lafayette and that you support something remarkable that originated there and does so much good for this world of ours. We really need help during this most dark and scary time in Haiti. Thanks for whatever you can do.

God Bless,

Father Tom
