Panel time!

On October 7, Way Finders’ President & CEO Keith Fairey will be a panelist at the Financial Equity Summit, hosted in Brockton by the Partnership for Financial Equity. This organization brings together leaders in the financial industry and in the community who are dedicated to closing racial wealth gaps. And to shaping a better financial future for all.

Their annual summit is an opportunity to bring fresh energy, ideas, and inspiration to this work. Ideas such as Way Finders’ City of Homes initiative, which is turning blighted properties in Springfield into affordable homes for first-time homebuyers. It’s an exciting example of what’s possible when partnerships think big. (The supporters and funders of City of Homes are many, and most notably include the MassMutual Foundation, MassHousing, Baystate Health, and the City of Springfield.)

Because beyond turning abandoned and vacant spaces into beautiful new homes, City of Homes is a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization and generational wealth building. And one of the ways that City of Homes acquires distressed properties through the courts is now enshrined by law through the state’s Affordable Homes Act, which means that other communities can pursue it, too.

New degree, new job, new keys: Shawna Peebles of Holyoke has a new lease on life.

Studying for an advanced degree—and working multiple jobs—while facing housing instability may sound impossible. Shawna Peebles did it, with support from Way Finders’ Homeownership Specialist Arcides Nieves. She graduated in May 2026 with her master’s and recently landed both a promising role in her field and, after more than 150 applications, an apartment. No more paying for hotels or sleeping in her car. In her words:

“After facing homelessness for two years, six months, and two days, I officially got my keys on August 10. It’s surreal. Every night I get home, and it’s been just a little over a week, it makes a big difference with mental health and well-being. Stable housing is an absolute human right. I can’t thank Arcides and Way Finders enough for helping me reach this milestone.”

A back-to-school bash for families in Way Finders’ HomeBASE Enhanced Stabilization pilot program delivered “the VIP service,” per party planners Betsey Torres (Stabilization Advisor) and Monifea Griffin (Stabilization Services Coordinator). Families were specially invited to a relaxing day in the park—featuring backpacks with supplies, haircuts, food, and games.

The pilot program seeks to improve upon the state’s existing two-year HomeBASE program, which provides support for families who leave emergency shelter, especially through more case management at key transition times. With the big-picture goal of creating more durable housing stability. If Way Finders can effectively demonstrate the success of the pilot, the next step will be to advocate to change state policy for the benefit of residents across the state.

I’ve seen people who come out of shelter feeling uncertain. Then all of a sudden they’re making it, you know, I’m seeing the progress. They’re overcoming challenges and are off to a great start.”
