NHTSA has released its 2024 Alcohol Impaired Driving Traffic Safety Facts. Here are a few national findings:
• In 2024, there were 11,904 fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes in which at least one driver was alcohol-impaired. This represented 30 percent of all traffic fatalities in the United States for the year.
• On average, one alcohol-impaired-driving fatality occurred every 44 minutes in 2024.
• The 21- to 24-year-old age group had the highest percentage (28%) of alcohol-impaired drivers in fatal traffic crashes compared to other age groups in 2024.
• Males had a higher percentage (22%) of alcohol-impaired drivers in fatal traffic crashes than females (16%) in 2024.
• Traffic fatalities in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes decreased 3.9 percent (12,382 to 11,904 fatalities) from 2023 to 2024.

Understanding standard drink size matters! One can, bottle, or glass does not always equal one drink. Sometimes it’s binge drinking in one container. Binge drinking is defined as consuming five or more standard drinks per occasion for males and four or more standard drinks for females. A standard drink is 12 oz. of beer (5% ABV), 5 oz. of wine (12% ABV), or 1.5 oz. of distilled spirits (40% ABV). Youth access alcohol either from social or retail sources. Social access is when youth get alcohol at a party, from their parents, a sibling, or a friend. Retail access is when youth purchase or take alcohol from a store, restaurant, or bar. Retail access also includes youth ordering alcohol to be delivered or shipped to their home. Law enforcement offers a unique and valuable perspective on substance use prevention. Because prevention coalitions strategize from multiple angles, they can bring broader perspectives to evidence-based strategies to address issues before they become law enforcement problems. Coalition membership fosters positive collaboration within a community to prevent youth substance use, benefiting law enforcement and the community. Sometimes, people just don’t know. That’s how norms stay the same. Let’s start the conversation that most youth don’t drink alcohol; however, it’s still the most used substance by youth in Illinois and across the country. Be a part of the solution. Prevention works!
