What happens when energy investment leaves Louisiana?

Fewer jobs, stalled projects, and more uncertainty for families and businesses that depend on affordable, reliable energy.

CEA’s Meghan Thacker, Vice President for State and Federal Affairs, explains why the Louisiana Energy Protection Act could help provide certainty for investment while protecting Louisiana’s economic future.

Read more about what this could mean for Louisiana consumers and businesses. ⬇️

Louisiana’s energy sector drives growth, builds and sustains communities, funds public services including coastal protection, and provides hundreds of thousands of high-paying jobs. Will data centers drive up electricity prices in Arkansas? Not necessarily.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette recently highlighted reporting showing that higher electricity demand does not automatically mean higher prices. Multiple factors impact electricity costs as demand grows, including long-term infrastructure needs and system planning.

What does that mean for Arkansas customers? Smart planning will be critical to keeping energy reliable and affordable as the state continues to grow. ⬇️

The Washington Post published a story several months ago with this headline: “There’s a reason electricity prices have been rising. And it’s not data centers.” You wouldn’t believe that if you relied on the alarmists who have been active on...

What keeps New Mexico growing?

Reliable energy.

As communities expand, homes, schools, and businesses all depend on energy that’s there when it’s needed. That starts with dependable supply—and the infrastructure that delivers it.

Pipelines help move energy safely and efficiently across the state, supporting everyday life and long-term growth.

Powering homes. Supporting businesses. Keeping communities moving.

New Mexico’s energy strength starts with reliable supply.

Natural gas powers about 25% of the state’s electricity, helping ensure energy is available when demand rises.

But energy only matters if it can reach people.

Pipelines help safely and efficiently move that energy across the state—connecting supply to homes, businesses, and communities.

That’s what keeps New Mexico running.

As artificial intelligence and data center growth continue reshaping the economy, policymakers must also recognize their growing role in national security, emergency response, and critical infrastructure resilience. Reliable energy and responsible infrastructure planning will be essential to supporting America’s digital future.

“Artificial intelligence and data centers are rapidly becoming core elements of U.S. national security. While often discussed in economic terms, these facilities also support critical services, from healthcare delivery and emergency response to secure communications, military logistics, and intelligence processing. They are part of the digital infrastructure that modern societies rely on to function securely. Thank you to the Governor for his support of the legislation passed in Tallahassee to ensure that Florida plays its part in securing our national security," said Lt. Col. Al Santos (Ret.).

Lt. Col. Al Santos (Ret.) served more than a decade as a U.S. Army Foreign Area Officer, leading political-military engagements across Central Asia and supporting U.S. embassy operations, strategic communications, and national security initiatives worldwide.

“Consumer Energy Alliance is grateful to the Governor and the Florida Legislature for putting Florida residents and businesses first. With a clear framework in place that promotes resilience and protects consumers, we can responsibly welcome private investment to Florida that will create jobs, power Florida’s economy forward and strengthen national security,” Kevin Doyle, Southeast Executive Director, Consumer Energy Alliance.

As data center growth increases energy demand nationwide, protecting consumers and maintaining reliable infrastructure must remain a priority.

Florida’s newly signed SB 484 helps ensure residential and small business customers are protected while supporting responsible investment, local oversight, and long-term energy resilience.

Increasing domestic energy production can help stabilize prices and strengthen U.S. energy security.

What does this mean?

More energy produced at home can help keep costs more stable for consumers while strengthening national security and supporting long-term economic growth.

It also shows that responsible development can coexist with environmental stewardship, tourism, and strong local economies—while providing affordable, reliable, and cleaner access to oil and natural gas.

A new report explores the economic opportunity of unlocking the South-Central Gulf of America—and the results are significant:

• Nearly doubling investment, jobs, and GDP contributions by 2040
• Almost tripling government revenues
• Expanding American energy supply to help meet rising demand

The future of American energy, jobs, and investment depends on what happens next.

For Indiana families, energy policy comes down to two things: keeping the lights on and keeping bills manageable.

CEA’s Zach Kent, Midwest Executive Director, highlights a critical reality—those goals depend on whether infrastructure keeps up with demand.

Much of Indiana’s grid was built for a different time, before today’s growth in electrification, data centers, and industrial demand. When that system isn’t expanded in time, the impact shows up fast:
• Higher costs from delayed upgrades
• More strain during peak demand
• Greater pressure on household budgets

Indiana has remained relatively stable because it has continued investing. But other states show what happens when that progress stalls—higher prices and weaker reliability.

The takeaway: affordability is built over time. Is Indiana doing enough to stay ahead?

Affordability is not simply regulatory rhetoric; it is the byproduct of how effectively the energy system is built and managed over time.

Industrial projects don’t wait—they go where there’s certainty.

Louisiana has more than a dozen proposed carbon capture projects representing tens of billions in investment and thousands of jobs. But many of these opportunities remain on hold as other states move faster to create a clear path forward.

That matters. When projects shift elsewhere, it’s not just lost jobs and investment—it’s lost infrastructure and economic activity that help keep energy systems reliable and costs more stable for families and businesses.

Our recent Consumer Energy Alliance panel highlighted how quickly this window can close as competition intensifies.

The bottom line: states that move with clarity and consistency will be the ones that capture these opportunities.

How should Louisiana compete?

Businesses making multibillion-dollar investments are not just evaluating sites, they are evaluating certainty. They want to know that projects can move forward within a predictable regulatory environment and alongside communities that are informed, engaged, and confident in the process. When that c...

Time well spent in Springfield, IL supporting Nuclear Matters Advocacy Day and attending the Illinois Chamber of Commerce 2026 Chamber Day earlier this week. The Chamber delivered a strong program focused on how Illinois can power new economic opportunities across the state, including serving growing large-load users like data centers while keeping affordability for consumers at the forefront.

Those conversations also reinforced the critical role nuclear energy plays in maintaining a reliable, around-the-clock power supply that supports economic growth, strengthens the grid, and helps keep costs stable for families and businesses.

We also heard from an outstanding lineup of leaders, including the Speaker and Senate Minority Leader John Curran.

Special thanks for the warm welcome and continued support of the nuclear industry to State Senator Sue Rezin, State Senator Chris Balkema, House Leader Tony McCombie, Rep. Jason R. Bunting, Rep. Norine Hammond, Rep. Jackie Haas, Rep. Marcus Evans, and Senate Minority Leader John Curran.

We even had the chance to run into Gov. Pritzker in the elevator and thank him for taking action to help ensure Illinois remains a nuclear leader in America.

Strong leadership, meaningful conversations, and continued momentum for Illinois’ energy future.
