SEMAP SEMAP is dedicated to preserving and expanding access to local food and sustainable farming in SE MA We also host workshops throughout the year.

Preservation: SEMAP works with farmers and the community to keep working farmland in production. Once agricultural soils are polluted, they can't be restored. Safeguarding working farmland maintains a way of life and a treasured landscape. Education: SEMAP offers workshops and technical assistance to farmers covering techniques and topics such as social media marketing, business management, and ex

panding sales. Our flagship annual event, the Agriculture + Food Conference, offers workshops and sessions for farmers, gardeners, and locavores. Access: Local food should be available to everyone to enjoy it at home, at schools, in hospitals, daycare facilities, and in restaurants regardless of one’s socioeconomic background. SEMAP advocates for programs and policies that make local food affordable for everyone, like the Healthy Incentives Program. Research: SEMAP undertakes research projects that support the region’s agricultural community. Gathering and analyzing data provides a basis for requesting financial resources and a baseline from which to measure positive and negative changes to Southeastern Massachusetts’ food system.

Today I had the opportunity to join Congressman Jim McGovern, Congressman Bill Keating, Mayor Jon Mitchell, and so many incredible community partners for the End Hunger Now Tour at the New Bedford Public Schools Culinary Center.

What an impressive facility and an important investment in our community. The Culinary Center is producing millions of healthy meals for New Bedford students each year and making sure every child has access to hot breakfast and lunch at no cost. That matters.

The conversations today also reinforced something we see every day at SEMAP: food access, nutrition, local agriculture, and public health are deeply connected. Building stronger, more equitable food systems takes collaboration across schools, farms, nonprofits, government, and community organizations — and it was inspiring to see so many people at the table working toward that shared goal.

Grateful to be part of the conversation and to see this kind of commitment to nutrition equity and feeding our kids.

May is Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month — a time to celebrate the cultures, traditions, and contributions of AAPI communities, including the rich food traditions that connect generations and communities. 🌱
Greens are in season right now, making it the perfect time to explore the incredible variety of Asian greens available from local farms and farmers markets. From bok choy and g*i lan to mustard greens, mizuna, tatsoi, and more, these fresh, locally grown vegetables are deeply important to many cultural cuisines and offer amazing flavors and textures to try at home. 🥬✨

Supporting farms that grow culturally relevant crops helps strengthen local food systems, preserve food traditions, and expand access to fresh, nutritious food throughout our region. Visit your local farmers market this season and discover something new!

This Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

As families and friends gather for cookouts and celebrations, consider supporting local farms by sourcing ingredients grown and raised right here in our communities. Choosing local food helps sustain the farmers who steward our farmland and strengthen our regional food system.

Interested in the process of building and installing permanent deer fencing? Join us for a wagon ride around Langwater Farm in Easton to see their deer fencing in action, including post pounding and brace building demonstrations. Langwater farm has been building and maintaining permanent deer fencing on their 80 acre farm for many years. They also install fencing and other agricultural infrastructure on neighboring farms and for other clients. This is a great opportunity to get your questions answered and find out if a similar fencing system might be plausible for you. Also, UMass Extension will be leading us in a pest walk through Langwater's flower field and to help identify pests and potential issues to help you look for similar things on your farm!

Following the Twilight, there will be delicious wood fired pizza and refreshments from the folks at Langwater!

This is going to be a fun one and we hope to see you there!
