Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment CPCM is developing sustainable solutions to reduce all forms of child maltreatment in South Dakota. CPCM brings unity to the work.

The Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment (CPCM) is developing sustainable solutions to reduce all forms of child maltreatment in South Dakota, beginning with child sexual abuse. Child maltreatment prevention and response is a complex issue. Responsibility for prevention efforts and corresponding promotion of child wellbeing is shared across multiple agencies and programs in the child welfare system. Established by the South Dakota Legislature in 2017, CPCM is housed within the School of Health Sciences at the University of South Dakota and led by a 30-member Advisory Board. CPCM aims to align local, tribal, state and federal efforts to protect children. CPCM’s work product revolves around the CDC Adverse Childhood Experiences prevention strategies. The activities performed by the CPCM partners advance better coordination of programs across systems to take full advantage of the use of available resources statewide.

❤️ This resource would not exist without family leaders.

Throughout South Dakota's ECCS initiative, parents and caregivers generously shared their experiences, ideas, challenges, and successes. Their leadership helped shape programs, inform decisions, and strengthen systems serving young children and families.

Growing Family Leadership in South Dakota was created to preserve those lessons and provide a practical resource for organizations that want to build authentic partnerships with families.

Thank you to the family leaders whose voices continue to guide this work.

CPCM was honored to bring together several current and past advisory council members last month. The gathering was time to reflect on our upcoming 10th Anniversary, the work that has been done, and CPCM's current strategies. These state and community members were instrumental in our formation and continue to guide our work. Thank you for all that you do keep children safe and supported in SD!

What have we learned from five years of building family leadership through CPCM's ECCS initiative?

âś… Families want meaningful roles, not token representation.
âś… Trust and relationships matter.
âś… Leadership opportunities need support, flexibility, and accessibility.
âś… Lived experience is expertise.

These lessons and many more are highlighted in Growing Family Leadership in South Dakota, a new guide developed from the experiences of family leaders, partners, and communities engaged in South Dakota's ECCS work.

We hope this resource helps organizations across the state strengthen authentic family engagement and shared leadership.

Over the past several years, South Dakota's Early Childhood Comprehensive Systems (ECCS) initiative has worked alongside families, community partners, and state leaders to strengthen family voice and leadership across early childhood systems.

We're excited to share Growing Family Leadership in South Dakota: A Practical Guide for Building Authentic Family Engagement and Shared Leadership.

This resource captures lessons learned through the ECCS project and translates them into practical strategies, tools, and recommendations that organizations can use to build meaningful partnerships with families and create opportunities for shared leadership.

When families are recognized as experts in their own experiences, stronger systems and better outcomes follow.
