☀️ The youth program’s annual summer academy programming for young newcomers has come to a close! In the past four weeks, students from local middle and high schools gathered daily to strengthen their English skills, explore post-high school pathways and make community connections.

As part of this year’s programming, the students enjoyed career fairs, hearing from professionals across a variety of fields such as sales, healthcare and the legal fields and asking questions to reflect on their own career goals.

Thank you to all volunteers and interns who participated in supporting our young clients!

Meet Emily, a rising senior at the University of South Carolina studying Political Science on the pre-law track. Prior to working at the IRC, she interned at a private sector law firm and the House of Representatives. Since beginning her internship, Emily has developed a social services guide to support clients as they navigate mental health, education, childcare, food and clothing resources.

Thank you, Emily, for supporting newcomers holistically as they seek self-sufficiency and stability in the U.S.

Meet Lexi, a rising junior at the University of Maryland – College Park studying Global Health and International Relations. As part of the UMD Global Fellows program, Lexi took a seminar on U.S. diplomacy which inspired her to pursue internship opportunities at the IRC this summer.

💛July is Disability Pride Month and the IRC in Silver Spring is proud to work with CCI Health Services to support local newcomers of all abilities as they seek self-sufficiency in the U.S.

♿️CCI provides access to ongoing medical care, non-emergency medical transportation, medical equipment and other services. Services like these allow clients to reach self-sufficiency goals, such as independently attending doctor’s appointments.
