The evening hymn “The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended” is typically sung to the tune ST CLEMENT, but The Compline Choir more often uses the alternative tune included by The Hymnal 1940: LES COMMANDEMENTS (a.k.a. “Genevan Decalogue”), a 17th-century melody from the Huguenot Psalter, including a delightful “motet harmonization” by Claude Goudimel for the final verse.

Following the previous post (which was a selection from Cyrillus Kreek’s Taavati Laulud [Psalms of David] that the Compline Choir sang for the first time in May 2026), here is a memorable presentation of another selection by Kreek from that same 1923 collection: Õnnis on inimene [Blessed is the man], a setting of verses drawn from Psalms 1, 2, and 3, recorded during a service of Evensong in Canterbury Cathedral during the choir’s 2024 pilgrimage to the UK.
