The cat at the pound didn't meet any of the requirements. I needed a short-haired outdoor cat because my then husband had allergies. This one had long gray fur and was "inside only".

She, like all the cats in this room, was very sick and was soon to be put down. Unlike the rest who were curled up miserably in their corners, she yowled vehemently at the bars, her eyes full of green goo. In between batting at the door, she sneezed violently. She had beautiful green eyes and shimmering blue-gray fur.

These were no pleading mews but howls of protest. How could I leave her there? I thought I would return her to the pound when she was well and give her more time since I doubted I would be able to keep her. I named her Lady Jane after the ill-fated queen of England. Unlike her namesake, Lady Jane did not meet a tragic end. Miraculously, she didn't trigger allergies and her luck continued to hold.

When she was 15, Lady Jane covered herself in polyurethane. She ran across the newly polyurethaned floors of my house and encased herself in it. I rushed her to the vet, but the vet didn't hold out much hope. She had ingested a lot of industrial grade chemicals and removing it from her skin would require several hours of anesthesia. I told them to try anyway. Four hours later, the vet called and said, clearly surprised herself, that Jane was fully awake and demanding food.

Jane came home the next day. She lived, as she had before, a kindly but imperious dowager. I would like to say that Lady Jane and I were good friends or at least that she was grateful. She never bit or scratched but clearly her station was above me. At 21 years old, Lady Jane woke up and couldn't stand. We had a few conversational words and she went to sleep. Good night, Lady Jane, I am as I always was, your obedient servant.

True Rescue in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, recently took in a litter of stray kittens around 8-9 weeks old. Upon closer examination, they noticed that one had four ears.

This rare genetic mutation causes the little feline no harm and just makes him even more adorable. The shelter plans to have their vet examine the 2-pound kitten but based on their research state, "We will have him fully checked by a vet, but from what we know, the inner ear is completely normal and will cause no issues, other than having extra flaps to clean!"

His caretakers have named him Audio because "he has built-in surround-sound speakers". They are having a blast with cat puns and sharing the sweet feline with their followers.

They wrote, "We'll videotape him soon and share his cuteness with everyone because this baby is simply ear-resistible (sorry, can't stop)! Welcome to True Rescue, Audio, where love has no boundaries!"

These innocent cats were eating scraps of human food and trash to survive after their owners abandoned them. A concerned neighbor called Muncie Animal Care & Services about the number of cats living in the home.

When attempts to contact the owners failed, the property manager was contacted and went to the home to find over 20 cats abandoned without food or water... Many of the felines are suffering from eye infections and other life-threatening illnesses. One female gave birth at the shelter and none of the cats are spayed or neutered.

They are all weary of humans and some are even labeled as "feral". Many of the cats are refusing to eat cat food as they are used to eating human food scraps and garbage.

The shelter wants to save them all and believes with proper medication and nutritious food all will make a full recovery. Several cats have eye conditions that are being closely monitored and treated. They hope to save their eyes, but time will tell.

Once the cats have been sterilized, vaccinated, and cleared by the veterinarian they will be put up for adoption. Many have a long road to recovery and will need months of medical treatment.

Their former owners have been tracked down and are being charged with neglect.

Pets receiving critical care facilitated by an Emergency Animal Medical grant may not be eligible for adoption until they have completed their course of treatment. If you would like to inquire about adoption of a specific animal, we strongly encourage you to visit the shelter’s specific website first as that is often the most up to date place to learn about available pets and review the adoption policies and process.

I drive a bus for the public transit company in Pittsburgh. On January 2, 2017, I was driving through Mt. Oliver when I saw a small patch of white in the brown leaves that covered the sidewalk. As I got closer, I realized it was a small cat that was completely soaked after sitting out in the rain. When I opened the door, he screamed at me! (He didn't meow, he SCREAMED!)

I told him if he was still there when I came back, I would take him home and take care of him. When I was done with my route, I parked my bus, got in my car and drove over to the pet store across the street from my garage. I bought a small pet carrier and a couple packs of cat food and then headed back to Mt. Oliver...

We found Honey the evening of this past 4th of July. Her eyes were completely sealed closed and she was running around blind afraid of the fireworks.

We called the SPCA for her. When they came, they immediately told us she would be put to sleep because she was too small. Of course we brought her right home and made a room for her. The doctors a few days later told us she was 0.5 pounds, would lose both of her eyes due to infection, and possibly wouldn’t pull through at all...

Spot, an 11-year-old cat, was dropped off at the Lichfield and Tamworth Branch of Cats Protection in England. The battered senior was extremely skinny, with dirty fur, rotting teeth, and ears so infected they’d swollen twice their normal size. Rescuers could tell this poor senior cat had spent most of his life on the streets.

But this rescue organization — despite being fully run by volunteers — wasn’t about to let this old cat suffer in silence. After sharing Spot’s story around the community, rescuers had raised more than $2,300 to give the cat a full-feline makeover featuring dental work, neutering, vaccinations, a microchip — even plastic surgery.

When the makeover was complete, everybody was amazed by Spot’s sudden transformation from battered stray to beautiful cat.

Zaphod was found in December 2013 with his back left tibia bone broken and sticking through his skin. X-rays revealed he was shot and the bullets were still in his leg, leading to infection.

The doctors estimated he had been living in that condition for about two weeks, based on how far the infection had spread. The leg was amputated in January 2014 to prevent it from spreading further.

After Lisa rescued Zaphod, he developed an urethral obstruction and interstitial cystitis. He spent two nights at the emergency vets office under sedation with a catheter inserted. Luckily, this was caught early on and no renal damage occurred.

One of the doctors treating him was the same one who performed the amputation and remembered what an affectionate cat he is.

His treatment was expensive, but she doesn't regret getting him. He's the sweetest, loving boy and most grateful kitty ever, who's gone through more than any animal should.

Zaphod and her other kitties, Surprise and Brie, are finally getting accustomed to each other. He seems to have too much energy for them! He meows when he's separated from them now, although he's fine hogging my daughter at bedtime.

We already had three rescue kitties at home from a local rescue that was awesome, but they had recently been forced to disband. We'd always hoped to get another kitty or two through them, but had not been able to before they had to close.

The former director of the rescue was driving home one day in a rural area when a little ball of fluff ran across the road in front of her. After stopping, a tiny little girl came running to her. That little kitty had no idea she'd just hit the lottery!

After lots of food, love, and good medical care, she was posted for adoption! My husband and I were having dinner when we first saw her picture. All he said was "She's a cutie!", and that was it. We were discussing names before dinner was over and had contacted our new baby's rescuing angel to let her know she was wanted!

We brought her home for the first time just after Thanksgiving, and our three previous rescues became instant big sisters.

She's still a tiny little thing and always will be, but she's healthy, and the joy she has in playing, loving and just being warm, safe, loved, and content rolls off of her like a tidal wave! The odds of her finding her way across that lonely rural road in front of her wonderful rescuer's car were astronomical. But boy did we all hit the jackpot when she did!

Our family is now complete, and we can't wait to spend as many years as possible spoiling her and her big sisters rotten!
