Would you spend weeks helping an abandoned pet regain their confidence?

Would you make room in your life for an animal who had nowhere else to go?

This is Clyde's story. One day, I brought out food to feed the feral cats in our neighborhood, and he came running out of the cat house we have out there and started rubbing up on my leg. His fur was all matted. His eyes and nose were infected and some blood was coming out of his mouth, plus he was skinny. We rushed him to the only open vet we could find and waited in the car for two hours while they assessed him (this was during the COVID-19 pandemic).

Would you carry a tiny puppy home if they were too weak to keep walking?

One day my husband, Mike, was driving down a one lane dirt country road, when he saw a kitten laying in the middle of it. He didn’t know if it was alive or dead. He didn’t want to drive over it, in case it was alive and he scared it, causing it to run and possibly get hit by his truck tires. He got out to check and saw that it was alive but too weak to even lift his little head to mew at him.

I was happy with my family of four rescue cats (and dog), but I also wanted to support the efforts of my city's great new animal control that is working diligently with area rescues to be no-kill. And I knew that if I ever got a fifth cat, it would be what my friends call a ""dented can.""

In September 2014, I saw this one-eyed boy, dubbed Sinbad the Pirate, posted on the animal control networking page. He was an unclaimed stray but was already neutered, so he started as someone's cat and was supposed to be extremely sweet.

I learned that the rescue I work with wanted to pull him but needed a foster home. Fosters for adult cats are hard to come by, so I agreed to take him.

Well, Sinbad turned out to be far from any ""poor little one-eyed kitty"" people need to feel sorry for! Vets estimated him to be 2-3 years old and said he'd been missing the eye from birth (a condition known as severe micropthalmia); his other eye isn't quite normal, either, though at this point, he seems to have good vision.

He is indeed very friendly, but he's also one confident, rambunctious trouble-maker! My other cats are social, but he was always on the go and would jump them just for something to do, and they hated it. At least he was good with my dog!

I was really desperate to get him rehomed at first, though I knew it was unlikely. Over time, with careful management of integration and trying holistic remedies as well, things have gotten much better, if not yet perfect. But eventually I came to realize that I really love him and that the thought of having to give him to anybody else horrified me.

He is the first to greet me at the door, follows me around like a dog, and loves to cuddle. So before Christmas, I messaged the rescue and told them I wanted to adopt him. Now (admittedly no surprise to my friends!), Sinbad the troublesome foster is home forever.

I started seeing a little striped gray kitty hanging around my house, and I could tell she was starving. Whenever I saw her, I’d quickly take a bowl of food out to her. We have a canoe out back covered with a tarp, and I noticed that she was taking cover under the canoe, so I put some straw down and some old blankets.

My husband was never a cat person. Always dogs. I am a dog lover, too, and have had many over the years, but am now in my 70s, too old to do the required training. When our last dog passed away, we replaced the carpet and said, no more pets. Husband said, "I don't care for cats. There's the litter box to deal with, cat food stinks, they shed, etc., etc." He never owned a cat, and had no idea whatsoever of what to do with a cat.

One September day, I was at cross country practice in high school. We were all stretching after practice, when two of the team members approached us, holding a tiny kitten.

As team manager, my coach instructed me to carry the cat back to the field so the rest of the team could finish. Gently picking up the small white and black kitten, I went into the field and reluctantly placed him on the ground. As an animal lover, it was very difficult to leave him there.

I started to walk back towards practice when I looked behind me. I saw him struggling to crawl through the tall weeds, attempting to follow me. Teary eyed, I knew I could not bring him back home, so I continued walking, leaving him behind.

Later that evening, I was having dinner with my sister and parents. I told them my story about the kitten, and how bad I felt leaving him behind. My parents, who have only owned a dog while we were growing up, have never owned a cat. My mom, feeling sorry for the kitten, volunteered to drive me back to the football field with my sister.
Shortly after dinner, it was completely dark out but we pulled up to the high school football field. I stepped out of the car, calling, ""Here, kitty kitty"". Eventually, I heard meowing and found the same kitten I had seen earlier. I brought him into the car, and we brought him home.

At first, we tried to find out if someone had lost a cat nearby. After hearing no response, to my surprise, my parents decided that we could keep him. He was starving, had fleas, ear mites, and ringworm, and the vet had estimated he had been on his own for two weeks outside. We had him treated, and we spoil him daily.

To this day, he has been a very cuddly, loyal cat. I am so lucky to have met him 10 years ago, at the football field. We named him Lucky.

My fiance and I adopted a 9 week old beagle/terrier-basenji mix a little over a year ago. I'd been wanting a dog for so long, while my other half was a little nervous. That is, until he met her. He fell in love with her the moment he saw her. We watched her grow and learn so fast. She quickly became a part of the family and the center of attention.
