When I adopted Dora Mae, she was already grey in the face. The rescue told us she’d been adopted once before and returned for being too quiet. Still, she leaned into my hand every time I pet her. She was my dog; I had to bring her home.

For the first several months we called her “Dora the Doorstop” because she was afraid of everything and rarely left the couch.

Then her true colors showed...

Petra was born in Serbia. She came from a strong Eastern European Malinois line. She was purchased by a breeder, and then brought to the USA before I met her.

She was crated most of her life and bred too early and too often. She exhibited clear and multiple signs of emotional neglect and a lack of socialization. Physically, the majority of her teeth are broken and worn, which veterinarians believe is a result of repeatedly trying to chew through metal on her crate.

The small island community where Petra lived tried to help her. Multiple caring individuals tried repeatedly to save her - from the kindhearted animal-loving ACO, the local shelter, the veterinary community, animal hospital staff and the animal-loving community at large - all without any success.

At the breeder's home, Petra was attacked by another female dog. The owner came to me for assistance with her injuries. They are too terrible and graphic to list here...

When collector Randy Guijarro bought some old photos back in 2010, one in particular stood out to him: a black-and-white picture of people playing croquet in the country side.

I met Asparagus, a 3-year-old brindle chihuahua, at an adoption event. She had just been rescued after spending the first three years of her life as “breeding stock” in a puppy mill.

She had been mistreated and neglected, had never walked on a leash or slept indoors, and had never received proper medical care or nutrition. She was a mess – skin and bones, scared of everyone and everything, withdrawn, depressed, and nearly bald from a combination of poor nutrition and stress-induced self-mutilation...

Rescue – that has never been a choice with me. It is who I am. Been involved since I was little. One day, I saw a post about a dog needing a new foster with a group I foster with (Angels Among Us). She needed a calm home. Well, I had two laidback dogs and no kids, so volunteer I did.

When I picked her up, she peed all over the foster’s husband as he carried her out. She didn’t walk, she army crawled on a leash and tried to hide. In my house, she hid in corners, under blankets, under pillows. At adoption events, she would go to the bathroom while walking there and hide the whole time. She was a ghost dog.

Yes, I worked with her and she would get better slowly. Tiny bits. People who wanted her pitied her. Nope. No one was going to adopt her out of pity.

After a year and a half...

We were looking for a dog to heal our hearts, as our previous dog Didi had left us far too soon. A small dog was our goal, so it was off to the shelter with us.

We went to the first Pop Up Adoption that the RSPCA had ever had in Brisbane, Australia, with high hopes. Unfortunately, all the smaller or medium-sized dogs were being adopted so fast that I couldn't find anything.

My kids were young and bored with the whole process, so my wife took them out of the event to play on the nearby playground. The responsibility fell to me to find a suitable pet.

I continued to wander from aisle to aisle until I came across a young lad that wasn't barking like the others. He just sat there with a dignity and grace wagging his tail.

I walked over to say hello, and we immediately bonded; he refused to leave my side. So he had made his choice, I was his.

I called my wife...
