On Thanksgiving, I needed to run to the store to pick up a few things. For some reason, I decided to go a completely different way down a back alley. From a distance, I saw what looked like a tiny stuffed animal. As I got closer, I realized it was actually a small kitten.

She was facedown, covered in ants, and smelled of urine. I picked her up and was surprised to see she was alive. I took her home, cleaned her, and tried to make a comfortable bed for her in our bathroom, as our two other cats were not happy about the new visitor.

I rushed to the pet store to get a bottle, some formula, and food for her. We thought she was a boy, so my sister named her Champ. Not more than a hour or so after I got her home, she began to have violent seizures. They continued throughout the night every few hours. I rushed her to the vet as soon as they opened the next day.

The vet was very discouraging and said we would most likely need to put her to sleep, as the seizures were not letting up. The vet let us know that Champ was actually a girl, but we decided to keep the name anyway.

I continued with antibiotics, and, to all of our surprise, the seizures slowly started to go away. When she was finally seizure-free, I realized her pupils in her eyes didn't move. Sure enough, the vet confirmed that she was blind from all the trauma. For the next couple of weeks, she continued to improve everyday and became the most playful, active kitten I've ever had. Amazingly, her vision started to come back, as well.

Today she is a typical 4-month-old kitten. She loves to play with strings, balls, and our two other cats. She is very good at playing fetch. She has brought so much love and joy to our lives, and I'm so glad we had the opportunity to rescue her. She is truly a Champ!

stray cat with a horribly disfigured face had been living a miserable life, scrounging for food in garbage bins in Istanbul, Turkey. Everyone who saw her just kept walking. They quickly wrote her off because of her ugly appearance.

A seven-year-old girl discovered the sick animal and felt differently than the rest of the people who had ignored her. She saw beyond her disfigured face, and knew she had to do something to save her.

She brought the cat home to her father and begged him to help. The poor cat was extremely emaciated, had a missing ear, could barely open her right eye, and had mites.

The little girl and her father rushed the cat to the vet, where they were able to nurse her back to health. They treated her with proper medication and performed surgery to repair some of her facial deformities.

They named the cat Gulumser, which means “she who always smiles.” The cat is now doing well and has grown inseparable with the little girl who saved her life.

This story just goes to show that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover!

Reminder when you are adopting a pet: Please take the time to meet the scared ones, the shy ones, the ones that don't stick out to you, the ones with boring colors, or missing limbs, the ones with a gray muzzle, the frail ones. They HAVE NOT given up. They just need you. And maybe you just need them too

I volunteer as a foster for a local rescue, and an older cat (7-years-old) named Ginny came into our care. She had been without proper socialization for months after the death of her owner, and I stepped up as her foster, hoping I could help her, but fully expecting she would be in our care permanently.

From October 31 until February 23, she shared our home, with two resident cats, a dog, and two young boys. She went from a cat who trembled when you were in the same room as her, to one who became an absolute snuggle bug.

I still remember bringing her home and setting her up in our spare bedroom. She dove under the bed and refused to come out. For two weeks, I just went into the room and talked to her. It took a month before we could really say we were petting her and two months before she actively sought us out for attention.

Although it was heartbreaking to see her go, she has a wonderful new home with those who plan to love her furrever! It reminds me why I do what I do. When a cat most thought was unadoptable found her home on her first debut to the public, talk about rewarding!

My boys already talk about when we will have our next foster. They are learning love and compassion and the wonder of loving a little someone who they know will leave us for a fantastic future.

Leaving the vet’s office holding only your collar shattered me in a way I never knew was possible.

Meet Lena.

The 5-month-old kitten was found barely surviving by a volunteer for the Tampa Bay rescue, Rescue Pets of Florida. She arrived with a fractured jaw and was unable to open her mouth to eat.

Lena weighed just 1.8 pounds and the rescue rushed her to the emergency clinic to be examined.

Even though she was in pain and clearly starving, she purred the entire time like she knew she was finally going to get the help she needed.

The rescue shared, “Lena is full of energy and a purr machine! She eats 4 packs of TikiCat mousse a day to survive. She is a really messy eater. But she loves her food.”

Without treatment, her jaw will fuse shut and she will be unable to eat. Lena needs reconstructive oral surgery which will cost over $5,000.

The rescue reached out to Greater Good Charities' Emergency Animal Medical fund to help cover Lena's medical expenses. The fund is able to help shelter pets like Lena thanks to your continued support.

Her prognosis for a full recovery is good. After she recovers from the surgery she will be put up for adoption. "Given how friendly she is, we have no doubt she will be adopted and be an inside only cat once she has recovered."
