⭐Lions World Vision Institute's Mission Moment⭐

When Ken’s vision began to cloud, he assumed it was a simple cataract— but the truth was more complicated. He also had Fuchs' dystrophy, a condition that made cataract surgery ineffective. Instead of clarity, his sight slipped further into a thick fog.

A lifelong science teacher, Ken struggled to teach, unable to see his hand in front of his face. Panic attacks set in as he imagined a future without sight—a life without teaching, traveling, or seeing his beloved grandchildren.

Ken was no stranger to adversity; a childhood accident left his right arm immobile. But losing his vision felt different. Sight was how he connected to his family, his students, and his purpose. His wife urged him to find joy in other ways, but the fear of becoming someone who needed care, rather than someone who gave it, weighed heavily.

After a long wait, hope returned to Ken in the form of a corneal transplant— and the result was nothing short of miraculous. Suddenly, Ken could see the vibrant faces of his grandchildren, the delicate feathers of a bird outside his window, the shimmer of snow on a mountain slope.

Snowboarding became safer and more exhilarating. Morning coffee came with the quiet wonder of watching eagles fish in the lake. Driving was easier. Most importantly, Ken returned to his classroom, guiding hundreds of students not only in science but in resilience.

Every sunrise, every familiar face, every mountain he descends is a reminder: miracles are real, and sometimes, they come from the generosity of a stranger.

‼️4,000 lives changed through vision screenings‼️

Last week, members of the Lions World Vision Institute team volunteered at The Special Olympics Florida State Summer Games held at Walt Disney World's ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida!

As part of the event, a variety of Health Services Activations were offered to participating athletes, and team LWVI was proud to volunteer through the Healthy Athletes – Opening Eyes program.

We are thrilled to share that nearly 4,000 screenings were completed during the two-day event! 👏👏👏

The Opening Eyes program provides vision screenings, eye health assessments/exams, and eyewear services to Special Olympics Florida athletes to help identify vision needs and improve access to care.

LWVI team members assisted the Optometrists performing refractions and patient support, along with managing the Eyewear Fabrication Station, which helped to ensure athletes received properly prepared prescription eyewear services during the event.

In addition to Opening Eyes, there were several other incredible health and wellness activations available to athletes, including Healthy Hearing, StrongMinds, Special Smiles, Ltd, Fit Feet, FUNfitness, and Health Promotion. There was even a dedicated Sensory Room available to provide athletes with a calming and supportive environment as needed.

It was truly an inspiring experience to be part of such an impactful event alongside so many dedicated healthcare professionals and volunteers. ❤️

📣Lions World Vision Institute is pleased to announce Stacey Efaw as Foundation Executive Director!📣

In Stacey’s role as Foundation Executive Director, her first area of focus will be spearheading the final phase of the capital campaign for LWVI’s new 30,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Vision Health Center, scheduled to open April 2027 in Ybor City.

The center is expected to serve more than 20,000 children and adolescents each year by providing free vision screenings and access to prescription glasses for those in need. 🙌🙌🙌

Stacey will play an instrumental role in the opening of the Vision Health Center, along with advancing LWVI’s mission to restore sight and transform lives through donation, transplantation, and innovation.

LWVI expects the Vision Health Center to serve as a national model for accessible, pediatric focused vision care — demonstrating how nonprofit innovation, research and community partnerships can close long-standing gaps in healthcare access.
