100 years ago, F.W. Murnau’s FAUST (1926) captivated audiences with masterful special effects and visual storytelling, and it remains a cornerstone of German Expressionist cinema a century later.

The classic tale of making a deal with the devil, FAUST tells the story of an elderly alchemist named Faust who makes a pact with the demon Mephisto to gain the power to protect his village from plague. Faust soon succumbs to temptation and asks Mephisto to restore his youth and help him acquire all the hedonistic pleasures that earth can offer. Eventually, his love affair with a young woman named Gretchen leads to tragic and devastating consequences for them both.

Watch this silent masterpiece come to life with a tastefully modern live soundtrack from The Invincible Czars next week.

Our Nouvelles Femmes series opens in two weeks with BREATHLESS (1960), Jean-Luc Godard’s groundbreaking feature debut that helped launch the French New Wave.

Michel (Jean-Paul Belmondo) stomps the accelerator, is Parisian-cool, and casual about the big things (love, living and dying). Speeding ahead like Bogart in those American Noir movies, with the American Patricia (Jean Seberg) sharing his crime spree. She (standing still) gives us a Mona Lisa gaze: all the mysteries.

Join us on Sunday, September 13 for a special advance screening of Cai Indermaur’s award-winning documentary, The Pain and the Power.

Decades after a sixteen-year addiction to co***ne, alcohol, and crack nearly ended his life, a Q***r musician retraces his memory, music, and the wreckage left behind.

Tracing a 30-year career forged at the intersection of queerness, faith, addiction, trauma, and self-reinvention, The Pain And The Power asks what remains after belief systems fail, relationships end, and the spotlight moves on; and how art can transform damage into something communal, generous, and alive.
