The Millionaires Tax will have real, tangible effects for working people in Washington - from expanding the Working Families Tax Credit, to increased funding for healthcare, education, and the other essential services we all rely on.

"According to the Washington State Budget & Policy Center...the bump in WFTC income eligibility means that a single parent with two children earning some $80,000 a year can now qualify for about a $995 cash hike — 'enough to cover music lessons, an unexpected hospital bill, or six months of car insurance.' Before, that parent would have earned too much to be eligible."

We are set to have a Millionaires Tax, a historic first for Washington state. A quick overview sees many wins as this bill crosses the finish line:

👍 Improve our upside-down tax code
👍 Address rising costs of living with expansions to the Working Families Tax Credit
👍 Infuse money into child care and schools, and help costs of household items
👍 Support small businesses, libraries, and schools

As we wait for Governor Ferguson to sign the bill into law, we urge the governor to maintain the bill’s critical wins that maximize support for Washington people. Our new blog post breaks these details down: https://budgetandpolicy.org/schmudget/washingtons-new-millionaires-tax-offers-big-support-to-people-throughout-the-state/

The Millionaires Tax recently passed by the legislature includes a dramatic expansion of the Working Families Tax Credit, an annual cash rebate of up to $1,330 for lower income people.

The maximum income to qualify for the credit last year for a family with three kids was around $68,000. With funding from the Millionaires Tax, that maximum income is now around $137,000, meaning many more households struggling to make ends meet will get a cash boost. This expansion will benefit almost half a million households in Washington, and will mean the credit can reach almost half of all kids (47%) in Washington.

Additionally, with the removal of an age restriction, young adult workers without kids at home and lower income working seniors will also be able to qualify. This is a historic move for the people of Washington and for our tax code.

The Washington legislature has approved a new

In the midst of so many federal policies that are meant to intimidate our immigrant friends and neighbors, we’re pleased to highlight how responded this session. With work led by grassroots partners, two important bills have passed and await the governor’s signature:

âś… The Immigrant Workers Protection Act will ensure that employers alert employees of upcoming workplace audits and that they inform workers of their rights with paperwork in the five most common languages spoken in Washington state.

âś… The Driver Privacy Act restricts Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) vendors and agencies from sharing license plate reader data and requires deletion of that data after 21 days.

Regarding the Driver Privacy Act, we are disappointed in the concessions lawmakers made to pass this legislation that weakens our community’s privacy and rights, such as allowing law enforcement to access the database for misdemeanor cases (e.g. people driving under the influence or trespassing). We look forward to working with advocates and the legislature to strengthen this law in the future.

None of this happens without years of collective advocacy, with partners like Latino Community Fund and American Civil Liberties Union Washington to lead these efforts.
