Who gets to belong?
For decades, American Muslims have too often been viewed through fear and suspicion rather than through the reality of who they are: physicians, teachers, engineers, entrepreneurs, veterans, parents, public servants, and neighbors who care for our communities every day.
That's why Dr. El-Sayed’s victory means so much. It doesn’t erase anti-Muslim hate and bias. It challenges the systemic racism and discrimination behind it.
Millions of Americans in Michigan saw a Muslim candidate not as a fear to overcome, but simply as someone qualified to lead.
For every Muslim child watching, the possibilities just got a little wider.
That is worth celebrating - for all of us.
