These hate are a result of hateful rhetoric by politicians - such as Queens Council Member Vickie Paladino who, “in now-deleted social media posts, called for the “expulsion of from western nations” and referred to New York Mayor Zohran praying with Muslim sanitation workers as “part of Islamic conquest.”

“We welcome the New York City Council’s decision to pursue disciplinary action against her for her repeated Islamophobic posts on social media. Council Member Paladino, a Queens Republican, will face formal disciplinary proceedings in the coming weeks.” CAIR-NY.

These hate crimes are a result of hateful rhetoric by politicians - such as Queens Council Member Vickie Paladino who, in now-deleted social media posts, called for the “expulsion of Muslims from western nations” and referred to New York Mayor Zohran praying with sanitation workers as “part of Islamic conquest.”

As painful, disconcerting and demoralizing incidents of hate and bias can be, there are many avenues for reporting them. It is important that this data is collected and in situations where an act of discrimination or a may have occurred, the Hate and Bias Prevention Unit can assist you in reporting the incident to the appropriate law enforcement agency - if you choose.

To report by phone, call the Bias Reporting Hotline at 1844-NO-2-HATE (1844-662-4283).

Please note that both Mehak Jamil and Imam Rafiq Umar sit on the Capital Region Regional Council for HBPU (Hate and Bias Prevention Unit) and can help with navigating complaints.

TIMES UNION OPINION: The following bills which have come before the Legislature would translate our state’s stated values into real protections.

The New York for All Act would prohibit state and local agencies from enforcing federal immigration law and require judicial warrants for ICE access to private homes and sensitive locations.

The MELT Act would require federal agents in New York to clearly identify themselves, reducing fear caused by masked and anonymous policing.

The RADAR Act would establish transparency by publicly reporting activity involving New Yorkers.

New York now have a clear opportunity, and responsibility, to respond with action.

With the current war in Iran and escalating tension in the surrounding region, travel across the Arab, Central and South Asian region is facing significant disruption. Flights are being cancelled or rerouted, airspace restrictions are changing quickly, and travelers may experience delays, congestion, or last-minute itinerary changes.

If you are planning to travel between the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Central/ South Asia in the coming days or weeks, it’s important to stay informed and plan carefully.

While travel to many destinations in the region is still possible, the situation remains fluid and may change rapidly. Staying informed and prepared is key to avoiding unnecessary complications.
