🌀 The Triskele: Ireland’s Ancient Triple Spiral

Few symbols feel as closely tied to ancient Ireland as the triple spiral.

One of its most famous examples appears at Newgrange in Co. Meath, a passage tomb built around 3200 BC. The design is carved into the stonework of the monument, alongside other spirals and geometric patterns created more than 5,000 years ago.

What the symbol meant to the people who carved it is still unknown. Ideas about life, death, rebirth, movement and natural cycles are modern interpretations rather than proven explanations.

That mystery is part of what makes the Triskele so enduring. Thousands of years later, it remains one of the most recognisable motifs associated with Ireland’s prehistoric past.

⛰️ Today is Reek Sunday in Ireland.

Each year on the last Sunday of July, thousands of pilgrims make the climb to the summit of Croagh Patrick in County Mayo, following a tradition that stretches back many generations.

The mountain has long been a place of pilgrimage and reflection. According to tradition, Saint Patrick spent forty days fasting and praying on its summit, and for centuries people have climbed "the Reek" in faith, gratitude, remembrance, or simply to find a moment of peace above the noise of everyday life.

Some walk barefoot as an act of devotion. Others come with family and friends, carrying prayers for loved ones or remembering those who can no longer make the journey. Whatever the reason, the climb remains one of Ireland's most enduring spiritual traditions.

Today, as pilgrims make their way to the summit overlooking Clew Bay, they continue a journey that has connected generations through faith, perseverance, and hope.
