Founded in the 7th century, there are two differing stories as to how Kilmacduagh Monastery came to be. According to Tuatha, one account tells how St. Meadoc was guided by an angel to go to Kilmacduagh in order to heal the King of Connaught, Guaire Mide Mac Colmáin. The King had the monastery built in his honour. The other account claims that Colmán Mac Duagh founded the monastery, after his belt fell to the ground. He saw this as a sign that this was the place in which the monastery was to be built.

Kilmacduagh is positioned at the edge of the Burren, and was associated with two local families – the O’Heynes and O’Shaughnesseys. The seven storey round tower is probably the site’s most impressive feature, standing at a height of 34.3m, and like the tower of Pisa, leans significantly.

Saint Ita was born around 480 in County Waterford. She was baptised as Deirde and grew up near Drum, County Waterford. When she was 16 she moved to Killeedy in Limerick where she founded a small community of nuns and resided there for the rest of her life. Ita also founded a school for boys, and her foster son, Saint Brendan the Navigator, is one of several Irish saints who studied there. She was believed to have the gift of prophecy and many miracles are attributed to her. She is often referred to as ‘Brigid of Munster’ and the ‘foster mother of the Irish saints’. Ita died around 570 and was buried in Cill Ide, a church at Killeedy where her monastery once stood. Her feast day is 15th January.

The Orange Order has offered to walk away and never return but only if they secure one last march along the Garvaghy Road.

There has been much speculation about the prospect of a “one and done’’ settlement to the Drumcree dispute which is now entering its second week.

It is understood the Order has made it clear they have no intention of returning next year or any future year on the condition they can return their banner to Carleton Street Orange Hall one last time.

Room is set up for Saturday evenings showing of the documentary NORAID: Irish America and the IRA. Door open at 5PM. Introduction of the film by former longtime NORAID Publicity Director Martin Galvin at 5:45. Film starts at 6PM. Kilashandra starts at 7:40PM in the hall. Should be a great time had by all, come on down!

Patronage: Cork, Diocese of Cork
Saint Finbarr, an Irish saint, who was well educated in Kilkenny, became a monk and was Cork’s first bishop. Legend has it that “God Himself” consecrated him bishop. He founded a monastery in Cork, where students and monks gathered to learn. It became an important center of learning in Ireland. He died of natural causes.
