We read this week of how the veil between the church on earth and the church in glory grows thin. What we see on the other side is a multitude no one can count, from every nation and tribe and language, robed in white, their every tear wiped away by the hand of God. John's vision in Revelation and Jesus's Beatitudes belong together. The poor in spirit, the mourning, the meek, the persecuted: These are precisely the ones standing before the throne, because the Lamb who is their shepherd has guided them to springs of the water of life. We are God's children now, John tells us, and what we will be has not yet been revealed, but when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. The saints are not distant heroes to admire but our companions in the same hope, knit together with us in the one body of Christ.
