🎃⁠ Did you know? Indigenous peoples have cultivated certain pumpkin varieties since approximately 3500 B.C.
⁠
A staple in our diets, most Tribes have their own traditional ways to prepare or honor this ubiquitous food: Diné cooks fry it with mutton, while Taos Pueblo cooks make a succotash by cooking unripe pumpkin with corn kernels and onion. In Woodland areas, pumpkin is eaten similarly to winter squash, occasionally cut into rings to dry and be reconstituted when needed.⁠

A group of women in Mexico is working to protect a tiny, stingless bee that has been treasured by Maya communities for more than 1,000 years 🐝💛

Known as the sacred Maya bee, the native Melipona bee plays an important role in pollinating tropical plants, forest trees and crops across the Yucatán Peninsula.

But deforestation, pesticides and climate change are threatening its survival. Now, women from the Melipona Bee Guardians Network are helping protect the species by caring for its colonies and preserving traditional Maya beekeeping practices passed down through generations.

The network currently manages more than 440 hives, while also helping women earn income from honey and other bee-related products. Their work is helping preserve an important part of Maya culture while giving these vulnerable pollinators a better chance for the future.
