We're excited to share the October newsletter from The Life Link's Arroyo Chamiso Micro Community!

Since opening in 2024, this innovative transitional housing community has provided a safe, supportive place for 59 individuals, with 22 residents successfully transitioning into permanent housing! 💚

We’re OPEN at our new home! 🎉

The Life Link is excited to officially be open for business at our new, expanded location at 2000 St. Michael’s Drive in Santa Fe.

This move represents much more than a new address. It gives us the space to expand our services, strengthen our programs, and serve even more individuals and families in our community with the compassionate behavioral health, housing, and human services they need.

We are incredibly grateful to , and Realty Gift Fund for helping make this next chapter possible. Their partnership and support have been instrumental in creating a space where The Life Link can continue to grow and serve our community for years to come.

Call for Community Support!
Transit Advisory Board Public Comment Meeting

The Transit Advisory Board is holding a public comment meeting Thursday, September 17 at 5 PM at the Transit Station, 2931 Rufina.

One topic of community interest is transit access between Cerrillos Road and Saint Michaels Drive, an area that includes The Life Link’s new location, the hospital, medical providers, and Micro-Communities.

Public comments will be heard at the beginning of the meeting, so attendees should arrive close to 5 PM.

Picture two versions of the same shelter.

In the first — the one most of us picture — cots in a gym, fluorescent lights, a stack of forms to complete before you're even allowed to sleep.

In the second: a room where you can see every exit from wherever you sit. A locker with a key that's only yours. A private shower with a lock on the door. A staff member who has known your name for three months and greets you the same way every morning. An intake question that asks "what happened to you?" instead of "what's wrong with you?"

The second version isn't a fantasy — it's Housing First, and it's backed by randomized controlled trials: people housed without preconditions are 2.5x more likely to remain housed after 18 months, with no increase in substance use. Housing isn't the reward at the end of treatment. It's the precondition that makes treatment possible, because a flooded nervous system can't absorb therapy, training, or rules.

Over the past five weeks, we've walked through the brain science, the misread behaviors, the numbers, and the cycle that traps people like Maria. Here's the part that matters most: we know what works. What's missing is the will — and the funding — to build it everywhere.

Maria is a composite, not one individual — but her story is drawn from real cases we've seen in our work.

She grew up in a home with violence. By her mid-20s, she's outside — no home, no consistent safety. Within months, her brain adapts to survive: the systems that handle memory and planning start losing power. She tries to get help. The intake process asks for an ID she doesn't have and a level of focus her brain can't currently give. She's turned away.

That rejection doesn't just send her back outside. It teaches her nervous system that help usually ends in harm. The next time someone offers support, she's more guarded, not less. The cycle tightens — and it gets harder to reach her every time it repeats.

This isn't a flaw in Maria. It's a system built for brains with intact planning and memory, applied to people whose brains have been temporarily reorganized by trauma. And it often starts young: one in thirty American children experience homelessness each year — one child in every classroom. Childhood homelessness isn't a childhood problem. It's a fifty-year public health problem we can interrupt now.

Some numbers change the conversation the moment you hear them.

47% of homeless adults live with clinical depression. A third meet criteria for PTSD — the same diagnosis we give combat veterans. 64% carry at least one diagnosable mental health condition. 42% have had suicidal thoughts in their lifetime.

If these prevalence rates described any other population in Santa Fe, we would call it a public health emergency and fund it accordingly.

But these aren't just numbers. Behind every percentage is a person trying to survive while carrying a level of depression, trauma, or psychological distress that would overwhelm almost anyone. These numbers don't describe a failure of motivation or character. They describe people whose brains and nervous systems have been asked to endure far too much, often for far too long.

Homelessness is a mental health crisis made visible. When we cut mental health funding, we don't make the crisis disappear — we just move it outside.
