Today, we’re asking northern New Mexico to stand with us. So, grab a rope and pull!

Every mission, every training, every hour spent searching for someone’s loved one is powered by volunteers—and by you. Your support helps us stay equipped, trained, and ready to respond when the call comes, day or night, 24/7/365.

If our work has touched you, inspired you, or reminded you of the basic beauty of humans helping humans, we invite you to give what you can today. ❤️

On Thursday, July 17, 2025 at 5:42pm, ASAR was called out for a lost 73 year old male in the Pecos Wilderness north of Cowles, NM. The subject self-reported via InReach to have lost the trail in the downfall of the Jaroso Fire burn scar and was potentially non-ambulatory from a leg injury.

After ground teams, which included Skyline Search and Rescue and Los Alamos Auxiliary Fire Brigade hiked 5 miles into the wilderness, they were able to locate the subject at the exact pinpoint provided by the Garmin InReach location ping. He was out of water, had minimal food, was cold, and most of his clothes and gear were wet from a powerful afternoon monsoon that had swept over the burn scar. After assessing his leg, it was determined that he could attempt to hike out under his own power.

After a few miles of dense uphill bushwhacking, the subject was loaded into the wheeled litter for the remaining 4 mile descent. The subject was safely delivered to his car around 5:15am and all responders were signed out by 5:45am.

Hiking in the Pecos area of Santa Fe National Forest during the summer exposes backpackers to a host of hazards including lightning, flash floods, downfall from recent wildfires, and extended response times in the event of an emergency. The subject in this case was prepared with a Garmin InReach which led rescuers to his exact location, and he wisely didn’t move after reporting his location. There actions help to speed the rescue process.

Thank you to SkylineSAR and LAAFB for helping deliver a lost subject back to his loved ones.

The other day we had a training introducing our team members to some of our new communication equipment. We now have a 50ft mast for our radio antenna along with a portable starlink kit. Great stuff for New Mexico, where communication can sometimes be hindered by the terrain.

Meet another member of our team, Ryan!

"Hola! My name is Ryan LaMonica, and I joined ASAR in 2020. I first discovered the outdoors during college with frequent trips to New Hampshire's White Mountains. During my junior year, a winter hike turned into a risky overnight rescue for a friend who lost footing on ice and slid over a cliff. The injuries were moderate, but the overnight temperatures were in the single digits. It was my first real experience with the secret network of search and rescue volunteers who miraculously appear in the night when called upon, even in the most uncomfortable and austere of environments. When I moved to Santa Fe, I decided I wanted to be part of this same system that saved my friend. My favorite part of SAR is working with people with a variety of professional backgrounds and recreational interests who are willing to sacrifice their free time for the well-being of complete strangers. Outside of SAR, I work as an R&D Engineer at Los Alamos National Laboratory. During my free time, my favorite activities include whatever gets me ready for the next big mountaineering objective, which is usually a combination of trail running, rock climbing, skiing, and ice climbing."

Several members of our team attended ESCAPE this past weekend. They got the opportunity to learn new skills, enhance some already known ones, and some even earned their Ham radio licenses. All of this was done while networking with fellow New Mexico SAR teams. Awesome work to everyone who attended!

Let us introduce you to another valued member of our team, Aimee!

"Hello, my name is Aimee, and I joined ASAR in 2007 mainly to meet new people, but I was also genuinely curious about SAR. Like many others, I've spent most of my life outdoors, fishing long days under the sizzling sun, camping, and hiking until exhaustion. Why not learn how to be safer out there? It's a great feeling to give back to the community and to help people in need. Almost 18 years later, I realize how much knowledge I've gained, the satisfaction of rescue, and the various incredibly cool skills I've learned. But it goes beyond that for me. My teammates over the years have been an incredible resource of support and just good ol' fun! What's my day job? Marketing & Website Manager for the Santa Fe Opera. I love it, but I also love this side gig!"

Let us put the spotlight on another member of our team, Brittany!

"Hello everyone! I received my BS in Human Biology at the end of 2023 with the goal of getting into a physician assistant program and am currently working as a certified nursing assistant. I have been with Atalaya Search and Rescue a little over 2 years now. My love of the outdoors and desire to help others is what initially got me interested in SAR. My favorite part of SAR is being able to give back to my community while working with and meeting awesome people along the way. In my spare time, I enjoy backpacking, running, snowboarding, fishing, painting, and really anything that gets me outside."

💫Volunteer Spotlight💫

We would like to introduce you to another dedicated member of our team, Jack!

"I am in my final semester of obtaining my bachelor's degree from UNM. In May I will graduate with a BS in Emergency Medical Services with a Diploma in Mountain Medicine. This summer I will be working in Grand Canyon National Park as a Paramedic and plan to continue Ski patrolling this winter.
I have always been interested in SAR. I remember learning about SAR in picture books as a kid and knew it was something that I wanted to do. Being able to combine being outdoors and helping others is a truly unique experience. I will have been on the team for 10 years this September. I joined the team when I was 14.
My favorite part of SAR is the community. Joining the team at a young age exposed me to some amazing people that have helped me grow as a human being. I also like the technical aspect of SAR and working/ hanging on ropes has always been fun for me.
My favorite outdoor activity is mountaineering. I enjoy combining climbing and winter skills to work towards an objective in the mountains."
