The Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) has announced the 21st Annual Winter Indian Market, returning to the Santa Fe Convention Center November 28–29. Juried artists from the Santa Fe Indian Market will share work ranging from jewelry and hand-coiled pottery to paintings and more.

The winter market is more intimate than its summer counterpart, and that’s the point. It’s a chance to slow down, connect with artists about their techniques, traditions, and hear the stories carried in each piece.

“Winter Indian Market is built for connection,” says SWAIA executive director Jamie R. Schulze (Northern Cheyenne and Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate).

Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day!

Today we honor the Native Nations and communities whose cultures, languages, and artistic traditions have shaped this land since time immemorial and continue to thrive today. We celebrate the resilience, creativity, and living traditions of Native American peoples, and the artists who carry them forward with every piece they create.

At SWAIA, we're grateful every day to work alongside Native artists and to share their work with the world. We invite you to join us in celebrating today by learning about the Native Nations whose homelands you live on, and by supporting Native artists directly.

The SWAIA office will be closed on Monday, October 12, in observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day. We'll be back on Tuesday, October 13.

Native fashion is having a moment — but where does it go from here? 👗✨

In a new feature for Cowboys & Indians Magazine, Kate Nelson talks with three industry leaders shaping the future of Indigenous fashion: Peshawn Bread (Comanche/Kiowa/Cherokee) in Santa Fe, Korina Emmerich (Puyallup) in New York, and Joleen Mitton (Cree, Treaty 8) in Vancouver.

From producing SWAIA's own Native Fashion Show to launching Indigenous New York Fashion Week to building Canada's first Indigenous modeling agency, these leaders are turning visibility into lasting infrastructure — fellowships, ownership, and economic sovereignty for the next generation.

As Bread puts it: "I want to see us so deeply rooted in the mainstream fashion industry that we outgrow the idea of a Native fashion industry."

On September 29, the City of Santa Fe Arts & Culture Department will announce the Mayor's Mural Initiative, a new effort bringing more murals, artists, stories, and creative opportunities into neighborhoods across the city of Santa Fe. After attending their first Indian Market in 1972, JoAnn and Bob Balzer were hooked — and 55 straight markets later, it's still "the first thing that goes on our calendar every year," Bob says. ✨

"Indigenous voices will no longer be silenced." That's the message designer Deven Michael Tso (Diné) sent through his debut collection at the SWAIA Native Fashion Show. ✨

Featured in ANNKM London by Erica Commisso, Tso's collection confronts the phrase "Kill the Indian, Save the Man" — the ideology behind the American Indian boarding school system — using tailored silhouettes to represent forced assimilation, layered with rich Diné-inspired colorways and prints that reclaim identity within that structure.

"The collection uses tailoring as a way to question assimilation rather than simply represent it," Tso says.

Beyond the runway, Tso hopes to open doors for the next generation — dreaming of design camps and school programs on the reservation where young people can learn to make and sell their own work.
