Did you know there are summer camps specifically designed for LGBTQ+ kids, teens, and families?

Imagine a place where LGBTQ+ young people can make new friends, have adventures, build confidence, and experience the joy of being surrounded by people who celebrate them exactly as they are.

And imagine families having the opportunity to connect with other families who understand their experiences and share their commitment to loving and affirming their children.

That's what makes LGBTQ+ affirming summer camps so special!

❤️ REAL MAMA BEARS HAS A RESOURCE FOR THAT!

One of the many resources available through Real Mama Bears is our list of LGBTQ+ Youth and Family Camps.

Our list includes camps in locations across the United States and Canada, with programs for children, teenagers, and entire families.

Some camps are specifically designed for transgender and nonbinary youth. Others welcome LGBTQ+ young people of all identities, and some offer opportunities for the whole family to attend together.

🌈 CAMP SPOTLIGHT: CAMP IT UP!

Today we're highlighting Camp It Up!, a California-based organization that has been bringing LGBTQ+ families together since 1990!

Camp It Up! creates opportunities for q***r families, families with LGBTQ+ children, and allies to experience the magic of summer camp in a welcoming, affirming environment.

Their summer camp experience includes outdoor adventures, arts and crafts, music, dancing, games, swimming, and plenty of opportunities to make lasting friendships.

And here's some exciting news!

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN FOR SUMMER 2027!

📅 June 6–12, 2027

📍 Oakland Feather River Camp, near Quincy, California

🏕️ Three-night and six-night options available

❤️ Limited financial assistance is available through campership programs, including assistance intended to help families from states with anti-LGBTQ+ laws attend.

For LGBTQ+ young people, finding a community where they feel completely accepted can be life-changing.

And for parents, there's something wonderful about watching your child laugh, play, make friends, and simply enjoy being a kid without worrying about whether they belong.

Because every child deserves more than just a place where they're tolerated.

They deserve a place where they're celebrated!

"Our first year at camp my kid was 5 years old. It was the first time in his life he had the ability to roam freely- when we didn't know where he was we knew he was safe. I even saw another mom tie his shoe and he sat with another family at dinner a few times. That year we referred to CIU! as tab camp because he loved to have a tab at the store and get ice cream by himself. This year he was 9. The day we arrived I didn't see him from parking the car until dinner. Camp is a great place for our family to be together, and separate.
I love CIU! because when my kid makes a friend and asks me to get the parents' information so we can keep in touch, the parents are ALWAYS folks I also connect with. Our camp friends are double winners- great kids great parents."- The Cupcake Family

Why is Q***r family camp important, you might be wondering?

I got you!

Representation matters, y'all: In our everyday life, we may not have the constant presence of Q***r families like ours--or even different than ours, but Q***r nonetheless. We are not alone, even if it feels that way at times. We see you.

Community and Belonging: While Q***r family camp has typical recreational programming, our Camp It Up! community also develops programming around our lived experiences and interests. Parent of Trans/Q***r # kiddos? We got you! BIPOC Q***r parent social? We also got you! Nature loving? Social justice minded? Yoga loving? DnD lover? We also got you. Your people are here.

Tolerance is not enough: At camp, we are more than tolerant. We celebrate and affirm, loudly! This can be a buffer against societal stressors we experience in our daily lives. This sort of affirmation is balm. Come and let your community embrace you.

Room to breath: CIU!, in partnership with OFRC handles logistics and meals so you and your children can be free to build family memories through adventures and building connections with others!. You ready?

*Through the Camp It Up! Campership Fund, there are a limited number of camperships available for non-Oakland families. The goal of these camperships is to increase access for Q***r families, especially BIPOC and families from red states with anti-LGBTQIA+ laws. All families attending the Q***r Pride & Community Week are welcome to apply.

Hello Campers!

Registration is just a little over 2 weeks away! Are you as excited as we are? We sure hope so. If you are not signed up for our email list, please make sure to do so by visiting our website: www.campitup.org

Here are some FYI's for folks new to CIU!:
- CIU! is hosted at Oakland's Feather River Camp in Quincy, CA.
- CIU! has limited camperships--BIPOC &/or Red state campers prioritized.
- CIU is 1 week long, with 2 options: 3 days or 6 days with this amazing community!
- Your registration fees cover 3 daily (delicious) meals and your tent or cabin.
- Communal Bathrooms and showers are single stall, well equipped and clean.
