Write for Convergent Streams: Belonging and Advent

The season of Advent is almost here, and we want your voice in our Fourth Quarter edition.

Theme: Belonging and Advent — A Season of Waiting, A Season of Displacement

Long before Christ was born, Mary and Joseph were already on the move, forced by census decree to travel while she was heavy with child. Soon after his birth, the Holy Family fled as refugees into Egypt to escape a ruler's violence. Advent is not only a season of quiet waiting. It is a season that remembers what it means to wait without a home.

We are inviting essays, reflections, sermons, and pastoral stories that explore Advent through this lens: displacement, hope, hospitality, and what it means to belong when you have nowhere to lay your head.

Whether you are clergy, a lay minister, an activist, or simply someone with something to say, we want to hear from you.

Today is International NonBinary People's Day, and the Old Catholic Churches International celebrates and affirms every person who lives beyond the gender binary.

The church has too often been a place of exclusion for nonbinary people. We reject that. The table of Christ is open to all, and the call to ministry is not constrained by gender identity.

To every nonbinary person in our community and beyond: you are seen, you are welcome, and you belong here.

On this Juneteenth, the Old Catholic Churches International pauses to remember and to celebrate.

On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned what had already been true for two and a half years: that they were free. The delay itself is part of the story. Freedom proclaimed is not always freedom delivered. The work of liberation is long, uneven, and unfinished.

As a church committed to those the world has pushed to the margins, we cannot observe this day quietly. Juneteenth calls us to reckon honestly with the history of this nation, to honor the resilience and dignity of Black Americans, and to recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of justice that the Gospel demands of us.

The same Christ who stood in the synagogue and declared good news to the poor, release to the captives, and freedom for the oppressed is the Christ we follow. We do not get to celebrate his resurrection while ignoring the chains still worn by his people.

Today we give thanks for all who fought, suffered, survived, and persisted so that freedom could become real. And we renew our commitment to stand with those for whom the announcement has still not fully arrived.

Blessed Juneteenth to all.

Could God be calling you to the diaconate or priesthood?

A vocation is not about status. It is about saying yes to Christ, yes to His Church, and yes to a life of service at the altar and among the people of God.

At Old Catholic Churches International, we welcome those who are prayerfully discerning a call to ordained ministry. If you sense the Lord stirring your heart toward the diaconate or priesthood, we invite you to take the next step with faith, honesty, and hope.

You do not need to have every answer today. You simply need to be willing to pray, to listen, and to begin the conversation.

If you are discerning a vocation, learn more at osv.myocci.org or contact us at [email protected].
