Nearly $194 million in California school HVAC funding could help districts improve indoor air quality, reduce heat-related disruptions, and keep classrooms safer during extreme weather. ☀️
The CalSHAPE program was created to support heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing systems in schools. But unless state leaders act, remaining funds could be returned instead of going to school communities that still need upgrades.
Extreme heat, outages, and weather-related closures are already disrupting learning across California. As of 2025, public safety power shut-offs increased by 145%. Of the 60,000 students who were absent from school due to extreme weather, 17,000 were in San Bernardino County.
⚡️ 🪫 When students miss school due to power shutoffs or outages, the burden often falls hardest on communities with fewer resources to adapt.
