ACTION ALERT: Tell the Board of Supervisors to Reject Membership in the Diablo Canyon 2045 Coalition

Please contact the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors and urge them to vote NO on Line 14 of the Tuesday, June 16 agenda, joining the Diablo Canyon 2045 Coalition. Why would the County join a coalition promoting Diablo Canyon's operation through 2045 before the seismic work is complete and before the reactor vessel embrittlement data has been publicly released and reviewed?

Key Talking Points

• The County's role is to represent all residents, not to join an advocacy organization promoting a specific outcome for Diablo Canyon.

• Joining the coalition would undermine the County's independence on future Diablo Canyon-related decisions involving public safety, emergency planning, environmental impacts, and regulatory oversight.

• Significant safety questions remain unresolved. The public still has not seen the final results of critical reactor vessel embrittlement testing (the Unit 1 Capsule B coupon testing), which could have important implications for long-term reactor safety.

• Key seismic studies have not been completed. Diablo Canyon is located in a complex seismic region with multiple nearby earthquake faults. Decisions about extending plant operations should not be made before these studies are finished and independently reviewed.

• The County should be demanding answers to outstanding safety questions—not joining a coalition dedicated to keeping the plant operating until 2045.

• Membership in the coalition creates the appearance that the County has already chosen a side before all relevant information is available.

• Public trust depends on County officials remaining objective, independent, and committed to protecting public health and safety.

Suggested Message

I urge you to vote NO on San Luis Obispo County joining the Diablo Canyon 2045 Coalition. The County should remain an independent voice for all residents, not become a member of an organization advocating for continued operation of Diablo Canyon. With important seismic studies still unfinished and critical reactor vessel embrittlement test results still unavailable to the public, now is not the time to endorse a coalition dedicated to extending plant operations. Please put public safety, transparency, and independent oversight first.

Linda Pentz Gunter from Beyond Nuclear explains the danger behind Trump's plan to fast-track experimental nuclear ☢️ reactors across the U.S.

By Linda Pentz Gunter The Trump administration is once again doing what it does best – demonstrating a complete disregard for the law, and we’re not even talking end runs around the IRS here, or slush funds with which to reward family members and violent insurrectionists. This time, it’s about...
