Have you heard the news? Starting June 1, 2026, certain CalFresh households may have to work or participate in a community engagement activity to keep CalFresh. This is called the Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWD) rule.

You can use the CalFresh Work and Community Engagement Requirements: Pre-Screening Tool, https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CalFreshWork to determine whether these requirements may apply or whether an exemption might be available.

Learn more about how these changes may affect CalFresh benefits at https://www.slocounty.ca.gov/departments/social-services/calfresh.

Congratulations Nour! We are very happy to share that past client Nour recently graduated Cuesta college. As President of the Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society, Nour positively impacted her school community much as she has all of the SLO for Home volunteers who’ve had a chance to know her over the last several years.

An exciting new chapter begins for Nour this Fall, when she will take a big step and transfer to a four year university to finish her degree. This milestone was hard won. Nour’s teenage years were filled with instability, facing danger on a daily basis simply to go to school where she was a top student despite the difficulties.

Moments like these are the whole reason behind SLO for Home. We exist to give people who have experienced war and extreme hardship the chance to truly thrive not just survive. SLO for Home is privileged to have been part of Nour’s journey. We can’t wait to see what she does next!

The SLO Food Bank has been a great support for many of the families SLO for Home works with. When families first arrive, they need extra support to get on their feet. Communities resources like the SLO Food Bank are invaluable!

Many refugees are losing their eligibility for formal food aide. We hope to see this eligibility restored but in the meantime food banks are even more important!

You’re invited! 💌 Join us for the Hunger Awareness Day Open House on May 30.

Get a behind-the-scenes look at the SLO Food Bank and enjoy some family-friendly fun! Don’t miss the highlight of the event—a build-off competition, where our incredible sponsors will assemble Summer Breakfast Bags to help nourish local children.

A big thank you to the Central Coast Aquarium for their generous summer camp scholarships for three of our youngest clients! Along with donor support, these scholarships will allow these little girls to have an amazing week learning about marine line and having a blast at the beach.

Without community and donor support none of our work would be possible. We appreciate everyone who pitches in, whether that is providing rides, inviting a family for a warm meal, or funding the supports that help our clients thrive!

We applaud the dedication of these women to continue representing their sport and supporting women’s rights despite extreme difficulties.

Lawful pathways for Afghans have been halted, cases reopened, and families pushed back into limbo.

These policies must be reversed .

Have you been wanting to volunteer?

SLO for Home is looking for a Dari or Pashto speaking volunteer who can translate during driving lessons for one of our clients. This would be a short term but important opportunity to make an impact on a family’s independence! The volunteer would need to be able to physically come along on driving lessons in San Luis Obispo county.

Send us a message if you are interested!
