The San Diego Center for Children is a nonprofit organization providing mental health and educational services to children and teens.

San Diego’s oldest children’s nonprofit providing a continuum of mental health and educational services to children struggling with mental, emotional, and/or behavioral challenges. We offer a range of different mental health services including outpatient, school-based, in-home wraparound, and intensive clinical services. We also have a schools for learning disabilities, a residential center, and a program to provide therapy and other supportive services to youth in foster family agency homes. We accept Medi-Cal Managed Care and most commercial insurances.

When weekly therapy isn’t enough, additional support can make a difference. 💙

Our Intensive Outpatient Program tween track is now accepting referrals for youth ages 10–12 who live at home and need more mental health support than weekly therapy.

Our after-school program offers structured group therapy to help youth build coping skills, manage emotions and strengthen communication, with a weekly caregiver group to support families along the way.

🗓 Monday, Tuesday & Thursday | 3:30–6:30 PM
⏳ Program duration: 6–8 weeks

When a tween needs more than weekly therapy, the right level of support matters. 💙

San Diego Center for Children’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) now offers a dedicated track for youth ages 10–12 who need a higher level of mental health care.

Through structured group therapy, youth build skills to manage emotions, navigate challenges, and strengthen communication. A weekly caregiver group provides guidance and support to help families reinforce these skills at home.

A fresh coat of paint and a generous gift of time.

Please join us in welcoming Afira Arrastia-DeVries as the new President & CEO of San Diego Center for Children!

Afira brings nearly three decades of leadership across behavioral health, education, trauma-informed systems, and social impact. Throughout her career, she has worked to improve outcomes for children, youth, families, and communities facing significant adversity.

As she leads San Diego Center for Children into its next chapter, one of Afira’s first-year priorities will be advancing the region’s first Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility. This new 24-bed program will provide individualized, short-term care for children and adolescents who need intensive behavioral health treatment, with the goal of helping them successfully return home and to school.

Afira succeeds Dr. Cheryl Rode, who is retiring after 16 years of dedicated service. We are deeply grateful for Dr. Rode’s leadership and extraordinary commitment to the Center, our team, and the children and families we serve.

We’re excited to welcome Afira and look forward to the leadership, vision, and impact she will bring to our organization and community.

Twenty-five years later, we remember the lives lost on September 11, honor the courage of the first responders and hold close the families and communities forever impacted.

Today, San Diego Center for Children joins the 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s tribute as we reflect on the enduring importance of compassion, unity and service.
