Try not to confuse your royalty 👑 this Winged Wednesday - we’re featuring the Queen Butterfly! 🦋

If you thought it was a monarch at first, we wouldn’t blame you 🙂‍↔️ With their wings closed, queens and monarchs look deceptively similar. And it doesn’t stop there, they even share the same host plant 🌱 - milkweed!

So how do you tell these two native pollinators apart? 🤔 Wait for them to open their wings!

Monarchs are a brighter orange🟧, and will have those iconic black veins on the tops of their wings. Queens lack ✖️ those black veins!

While chasing butterflies sounds fun, we do NOT 🙅 encourage folks to try capturing or touching them - they’re very delicate creatures! However, we do encourage photographs 📷 and documenting your sightings on iNaturalist.

We don’t have a volunteer event ❌ this Saturday, June 20th - instead, you can find us at ’s 🌻 Garden Fair from 🕥 10am - 2pm!

The Garden Fair is your local event to learn how to transform 🌱 your garden into a pollinator paradise. 🦋 Stop by the Canyonlands booth the learn about native plants, wildfire resiliency 🔥, and much more!

You can also explore The Nat’s native garden 🪻, meet other conservation partners, and enjoy hands-on activities 🎨 for all ages. No registration or museum admission required! 🙅

Catch our field team keeping Escondido wildfire resilient! 💪 They were hard at work last month maintaining a fire break 🔥 in Escondido Creek Conservancy.

What is a fire break? 🤔

It’s a gap in vegetation 🌳 and other combustible materials that slows 🐌 wildfires down and/or prevents them from spreading. Not only that, but it also helps give our firefighters 🧑‍🚒 a better path to combat the flames!

Shoutout 📣 to the awesome members of our field team who are not only accomplishing this vital work, but also capturing 📹 the behind-the-scenes footage!

National Get Outdoors Day 🥾 is this Saturday, June 13th!

It’s a day to encourage folks to connect with and learn 🔍 about nature and our outdoor spaces - it also happens to fall on our Stewardship Saturday!

Join Canyonlands in an outdoor celebration 🎉 at our Olivia Canyon event from 8am - 10:30am, where volunteers will help us maintain 🌱 some active restoration sites.

Happy National Trails Day! 🥾

If you’re looking for a hidden-gem hike in San Diego, look no further than the 📍City Heights 5-Canyon Loop Trail!

The trail is roughly 4 miles long, and ventures through both nature 🌳 and urban 🏡 spaces. Enjoy your time in the canyons watching wildlife or looking up 🔍 a species on iNaturalist, then emerge into the neighborhoods to admire some murals 🎨 or stop by ! Truly, this trail has the best of both worlds.

While you can start the trail at any canyon, we recommend beginning your hike at Azalea Park 🛝

We also want to shout out for supporting our trails with their Two for the Trails 🍻 Grant! With this grant, we are working to improve the trails and habitat 🌱 in Swan Canyon. Come join us at our next Swan Canyon event on July 11th! 🗓️
