Alleviating the suffering of homelessness in San Diego. Through thoughtful collaborations, we aspire to lead the nation in addressing homelessness.

Since 2005, LDF has funded and activated several high-impact programs that alleviate the suffering of homelessness - including employment and job training; community trash clean-up; actionable research across San Diego’s institutions of higher learning; permanent supportive housing; food rescue; meals and water; LDF’s Community Care Kit program; and more. We are excited to announce our latest strategic partnership with the Bill Walton Foundation, where together we are helping young people who have experienced homelessness pursue their dreams through the Shine On Scholarship.

And thanks to Hall of Fame Series coaches Mick Cronin, Tommy Lloyd, Mark Few and Matt Painter, we have kicked off the scholarship with a 4-for-1 matching challenge. At the Hall of Fame Series, which honored Bill Walton, the four coaches collectively donated a $32,000 gift in honor of Bill's iconic No. 32.

Additionally, Bill’s longtime friends Stephanie & Pat Kilkenny and Lin & Adam Cheyer are each contributing $32,000 if fans collectively raise $32,000. The Bill Walton Foundation is encouraging fans to quadruple their donation by “giving $32 for No. 32.” 🏀

Combined with the coaches’ $32,000 gift and Pat and Adam’s match challenge, your support can help the Shine On Scholarship launch with $128,000 to empower young people to find a bright and prosperous path in Bill’s honor.

Carrying forward Bill Walton’s legacy of generosity 🏀

The Lucky Duck Foundation is proud to partner with the newly-formed Bill Walton Foundation in honoring Bill’s commitment to uplifting others and creating opportunities for young people to shine.

On behalf of the entire Walton Family, I want to express our heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love and support you have shown us over the past two years as we have navigated life without Bill. Bill’s passing left an enormous void in our lives; one that is both deeply personal and impossible to put into words.

Although Bill is no longer physically with us, we hope to honor his spirit, celebrate his legacy, and continue making a difference in the ways he cared about most.
With the encouragement and support of Bill’s dear friends - Pat Kilkenny, Bob Rief, John Sarkisian, Drew Moser, and Dan Novak - we have created the Bill Walton Foundation to continue the work that meant so much to Bill.

Your support helps provide critically needed shelter beds. 🏠

Yesterday, we celebrated the opening of 15 new beds at La Posada de Guadalupe Men’s Shelter, thanks to an initial $180,000 each from the Lucky Duck Foundation and the City of Carlsbad, in partnership with the Catholic Charities Diocese of San Diego.

Now, the Lucky Duck Foundation and City of Carlsbad are matching donations dollar-for-dollar, up to $360,000, through our “The Beds Are Here. Help Us Open Them.” matching challenge to open 30 more beds.

At a time when nine out of 10 requests for shelter go unfulfilled in parts of San Diego County, and at a time when other cities in the region are reducing shelter capacity, every additional bed is a lifesaving opportunity.

And, we stand ready to launch similar initiatives with other cities across San Diego County.

After 16 years of experiencing homelessness and struggling with addiction, Chelsea is embracing a new chapter of recovery, stability and hope. But as she began rebuilding her life, there was something else she longed for: a genuine friendship with someone who sees and values her for who she is. Through our partnership with We See You San Diego, Chelsea was paired with Ashley, a dedicated volunteer who wanted to take her involvement one step further by building a meaningful, one-on-one friendship.

Together, they're discovering the power of connection, encouragement and simply having someone in your corner.

For Nate, access to recovery services meant a chance to turn his life around. He’s one of more than 55 individuals who have completed the detox program at Genesis Recovery since its expanded treatment beds opened in May 2025. His story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when people are given the support and opportunity to rebuild their lives.

But for far too many San Diegans, getting that help isn’t easy. There are barely more than 100 detox beds in all of San Diego County that accept Medi-Cal, despite nearly 1 million residents relying on this coverage.

To help close this critical gap, the Lucky Duck Foundation launched a matching challenge that raised $1 million to expand access to much-needed detox beds at Genesis Recovery, thanks to the generosity of the Caster Family, David C. Copley Foundation, Grossmont Healthcare and County of San Diego.

Nate’s story is one example of the life-changing impact that access to treatment can have. In this video, hear his story and see why expanding access to recovery services matters so much.

The path out of homelessness isn't one anyone should have to walk alone. That was the central theme of our recent Peter Seidler Way Symposium on Homelessness, where we brought together community partners to explore the critical role human connection plays in helping individuals overcome homelessness and build more stable, fulfilling lives.

We heard from Be A Friend – Impact a Life, Street Stories, Promises2Kids, East County Transitional Living Center (ECTLC), and We See You San Diego, who shared firsthand experiences and insights into how trust, encouragement, and consistent support can make a lasting difference.

Thank you to our incredible partners for sharing their perspectives and helping reinforce an important message: supportive relationships aren't just part of the path out of homelessness. They're essential to it.

New partners, new friendships, and more opportunities to make a difference! 💛 We're excited to welcome Humanity Showers and Convicted4Christ to the Be A Friend – Impact a Life family 🍀

These incredible organizations are doing meaningful work in our community, providing hot showers, hygiene essentials, meals, clothing, and other critical resources to neighbors experiencing homelessness. But their impact goes beyond meeting basic needs. They're creating spaces where people feel seen, valued, and cared for.

We recently came together for an informational meeting to kick off our partnership, share the Be A Friend mission, and explore how one-on-one friendships can build on the support these organizations already provide.
