This is what happens when compassion meets collaboration.

More than 1 million pounds of food have now been rescued through the partnership between the Lucky Duck Foundation, Feeding San Diego and Salvation Army San Diego — turning food that would have gone to waste into meals, opportunity, and hope for our community.

But the impact goes far beyond food. The program also provides job training and employment for individuals working to overcome homelessness, helping participants build stability, confidence, and a path forward. Nearly every Salvation Army resident who has participated has gone on to secure full-time employment and permanent housing.

To build on this momentum, we are proud to commit an additional $250,000 to help extend and expand the program 🍀

Thank you NBC 7 San Diego for the feature!

Together with Feeding San Diego and Salvation Army San Diego, the Lucky Duck Foundation is proud to celebrate an incredible milestone: more than 1,000,000 pounds of perfectly good food rescued from landfills while simultaneously creating jobs and pathways forward for individuals working to overcome homelessness.

This partnership is more than food rescue — it’s a model that works. With support from LDF, Salvation Army residents are trained and employed as food rescue route drivers, collecting surplus food through routes coordinated by Feeding San Diego. That food then goes directly back into the community to support neighbors experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The impact has been transformational: creating meaningful job training, full-time employment opportunities, permanent housing outcomes, and food access for neighbors in need.

And we’re not stopping here. To help extend and expand this proven program, the Lucky Duck Foundation is committing an additional $250,000 in support 🍀 This milestone proves what’s possible when organizations come together with urgency, compassion, and a commitment to strategies that truly alleviate the suffering of homelessness throughout San Diego.

At 72, Marti found herself on the brink of homelessness — something she never imagined. Through the Seniors Safe at Home program, a simple rent subsidy helped her stay housed, safe, and part of a community she loves. With nearly 30% of unsheltered individuals over 55, prevention matters more than ever. A few hundred dollars a month can keep someone housed — compared to the devastating cost, both human and financial, of life on the streets. 🍀 Share your luck. Help keep a senior safely housed and supported: https://www.luckyduckfoundation.org/seniorssafeathome

The next generation is already stepping up and leading with compassion 💛 At The Bishop’s School, our Lucky Ducklings led a powerful week of action — raising awareness and supporting neighbors experiencing homelessness and hunger through service projects, food drives, and hands-on impact.

The Lucky Ducklings are a youth-led movement of the Lucky Duck Foundation, empowering young people across San Diego to learn about homelessness, give back through service, and raise funds to support meaningful programs. While committed to addressing homelessness as a whole, the Ducklings place a special emphasis on supporting youth experiencing homelessness.

Each Ducklings group creates its own unique way to make a difference — proving that leadership and impact have no age requirement. Inspired by these students? Share your luck — get involved, volunteer, or donate to help support the next generation of change-makers: https://www.luckyduckfoundation.org/be-a-lucky-duckling

Real stories create real hope. Last week, Be A Friend – Impact a Life and the Lucky Duck Foundation visited The Teaching and Learning Collaborative alongside LDF Board Member Ben Schuster, who shared his personal story of experiencing homelessness growing up — and the journey that led him to a successful business career today.

Ben’s honesty, resilience, and encouragement deeply resonated with the high school seniors and their volunteer friends. His message was a powerful reminder that circumstances do not define a person’s future — and that with support, opportunity, and people who believe in you, change is possible.

We’re grateful to Ben for sharing his story and to TLC for continuing to invest in and uplift young people in our community 🍀 To learn more about Be A Friend and to explore how you can be involved, visit the link in our profile.

Brian and Rosie Parish are using their success to show up for people who need it most. As Brian shared, “Success means very little if you are not using it to help others.” That belief has fueled their commitment to investing in programs that create pathways out of homelessness. Despite being based outside of San Diego, Brian and Rosie have spent more than a decade supporting the Lucky Duck Foundation. Their mindset is simple and powerful: if you’re in a position to help, you do. That same spirit is shared by our co-founders, Pat and Stephanie Kilkenny, whose commitment to matching donations up to $2 million each year is helping turn generosity into real, measurable impact across San Diego. Thank you GB Magazine for highlighting our generous community!
