✨ We had so much fun at EELN’s first Professional Learning of the school year! 🌿

Our session introduced participants to the BEETLES Project and explored two foundational practices of outdoor learning: Making Observations and Asking Questions.

When we slowwwwww down and engage our senses, we begin to notice things we might otherwise overlook. 👉 Those observations spark curiosity, lead to new wonderings, and inspire questions about the world around us!

📍Join us November 10 for our next EELN workshop! We’ll explore how to plan and lead a workshop, develop a strong proposal, and take your ideas from inspiration to submission. Whether you’re considering presenting at the Environmental Literacy Summit, the AEOE Conference, or another event, this session is for you!

👏👏 A big thank-you to everyone who joined us in exploring, noticing, and wondering together!

✨ "Innovate today. 🌱 Nourish tomorrow." 🌍

Happy World Food Day! This year’s theme reminds us that cultivating a resilient, healthy future starts with rethinking how and where we grow—and at San Diego Children and Nature, we believe that transformation can begin right in the schoolyard. 🏫🥕

School gardens are far more than patches of soil; they are living laboratories. When students step outside with hand tools, clipboards, and magnifying glasses, outdoor learning spaces come alive by fostering:

🧤 Hands-on experience with seasonal cycles, soil health, and plant care.

📊 Testing variables, tracking growth rates, and practicing citizen science in real time.

🤝Teaming up across grade and experience levels to tend, harvest, and share the fruits (or veggies or flowers) of their labor.

Whether your schoolyard hosts raised beds, native shrubs, or a pollinator pathway, school gardens help nourish tomorrow’s eco-literate problem-solvers.

🌻 Ready to sow the seeds for an outdoor classroom project this school year, but need a little help? 🔍 SDCaN offers teacher/student side-by-side training that helps teachers explore how to incorporate the outdoors into their everyday lessons. 🕷️🎃✨ Think spiders are just for spooky season decor? Think again.

October might be the unofficial month of creepy-crawlies, but jumping spiders (Salticidae) are here to bust the "scary" stereotype.

With vibrant colors, curious head tilts, and enormous "puppy-dog" eyes staring right back at you, these tiny arachnids are charismatic ambassadors for shifting classroom (and home-room!) mindsets around backyard creatures.

Bringing nature study into the schoolyard this month doesn't have to mean giant cobwebs and jump-scares—sometimes it’s as simple as finding a bold jumping spider sunning on a warm school garden fence or brick wall. 🧱
