Statement from Local 145 President George Duardo regarding the May Revise released yesterday to the City of San Diego’s upcoming Fiscal Year 27 budget.

05/11/2026

For years, this Department has been operating at the brink. We can’t afford more cuts.

05/07/2026

The straight day positions on the chopping block with this proposed budget do important, necessary work related to community engagement, media services, training, and recruitment and retention.

The mayor’s proposed budget is out and it’s not good news for San Diego’s fire department or the communities they protect. Host 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻 sits down with union president 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗼 and health & safety director 𝗝𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗮𝘂 to break down what these proposed cuts 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 mean for San Diego and its firefighters.

From the elimination of the bomb squad’s dedicated unit and losing recruitment, community outreach, and fire information officers, to the devastating mental and physical toll on the firefighters running 30+ calls a shift on little to no sleep.

This one’s raw, real, and necessary. 🎙️

We need to advocate for resources that ensure our firefighters can do their jobs effectively. Let’s keep the conversation going and push for a budget that prioritizes public safety.

At this past week’s convention in Long Beach, Local 145 board members co-sponsored a resolution to declare neurological diseases as presumptive in California.

Firefighters face increased rates of neurological diseases like dementia, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s due to the exposures they face on the job.

Though passing a resolution through CPF is only a first step, it is an important one. The resolution directs the CPF legislative team to work with state leaders to craft a bill that can make its way through the legislature.

By declaring these diseases as presumptive, we can help firefighters get the care they need after spending decades protecting public safety.

Doc Roberts: a leader who has always put our union, our members, and our families first.

When our pension was attacked nearly a decade ago – and we had no death and disability benefits – Doc stood with San Diego City Firefighters. His support was clear: fight for all our members, protect our families, and serve our communities.

Doc’s work is about more than just winning fights—it’s about standing shoulder to shoulder with people you trust when the stakes are the highest. He’s relentless in strengthening our position, protecting what we’ve earned, and building what comes next for our union.

Doc is ready for the fight, ready to lead, and ready to serve every firefighter and every family across California as CPF president.

Congratulations, Doc, from Local 145!

These are the types of calls that the Bomb Squad routinely makes.

Suspicious package, investigate, all clear.

Imagine how many travelers would have been impacted if those same Bomb Squad members had been stuck for hours on a structure fire call?

Those are the nightmare scenarios that cross-staffing the Bomb Squad could create.
