Yesterday, the City Council executed cuts to San Diego Fire-Rescue in the upcoming budget, including removing dedicated staffing for the Bomb Squad and cutting several other key positions vital to recruitment, retention and training.

Local 145 is disappointed the City Council chose to cut funding for our fire service and are concerned about the state of public safety in San Diego, including both our ability to respond to major disasters as well as everyday 911 calls. Public safety should be the highest priority and right now in the City of San Diego it is not.

San Diego firefighters have reached our breaking point.

We’re worn down by endless hours and a lack of competitive pay. A San Diego firefighter could up and leave at any time and make tens of thousands more in Orange County, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or even in other Departments here in San Diego County.

Yesterday, we took to City Hall to ask our government to deliver the fair wages and benefits that firefighters deserve.

Voters up and down San Diego County have spoken loud and clear: our elected officials must uplift first responders and fully invest in our Fire Department and EMS services.

Local 145-endorsed candidates delivered at the ballot box up and down San Diego County. As we continue to make our voice heard on the campaign trail and in City Hall, the momentum is palpable.

We’re going to continue this work every day through to the November election and beyond.
