Our council celebrates the 161st anniversary of Juneteenth, the end of the moral failing and catastrophe that was slavery in the United States.

Freedom is a sacred right. It can't be taken for granted. In fact, it must be celebrated and protected at all costs. Our unions will organize and fight for that freedom, every day.

Our Ironworkers Local 229 sister, Sam N., who joined the union in 2018, has been detained by ICE and is facing deportation in about a week’s time. She has been an active and dedicated member of our union community, and is widely admired and respected for her strong work ethic and skills.

The federal government is planning to send her back to a country she hasn’t lived in since she 5 years old. She will be leaving behind her husband and daughter, as well as her mother, for whom she’s been the primary breadwinner.

Please donate to support Sam and her family during this difficult time. She will need resources to find her feet and establish her life in a strange country, and her family members will be missing the financial support she provided. This will be challenging and heartbreaking transition for all of them. Help us ease their difficulties by making a donation to support Sam. All funds donated will go to Sam and her family. See the flyer below for details.

We are heartbroken and outraged.

A security guard was shot and killed while doing their job at the Islamic Center of San Diego. They were at work. They were keeping people safe. And they will not come home today.

The Islamic Center is not only a place of worship—it is also home to an elementary school. Children were there. Children who should be free to learn, grow, and feel safe. Instead, they experienced violence in a place that should hold only peace.

Our deepest condolences go out to the security guard's family, their loved ones, the students, and the entire Muslim community.

Every worker deserves to be safe at work. Every house of worship deserves to be a place of peace. Every school deserves to be a sanctuary for learning.

We stand with our Muslim neighbors in grief and in solidarity. No one should fear for their life while praying, while learning, or while protecting those who do.
