Today, on May Day and Law Day, and the beginning of Labor History Month, we take the time to remember the rights we've won that we take for granted. We also celebrate International Workers' Day and labor rights. The eight-hour workday, paid sick leave, overtime, and retirement only exist for classified employees because CSEA fought for and passed legislation putting them into law. Today, let’s be proud of our contributions toward California’s future.

The California State Assembly established School Bus Drivers’ Day in 2009 as a well-deserved tribute to all those who devote their lives to ensuring that children safely get to and from school every day.

CSEA and its partners in the labor movement have made historic strides for workers’ rights and safety on the job. Establishing many rights that we take for granted, such as the eight-hour workday, weekends and the end of child labor, the labor movement has worked tirelessly for justice and equality in the workplace.

During the month of May, public schools and school districts are encouraged to commemorate Labor History with appropriate educational exercises that educate students about the role the labor movement has played in shaping California and the United States.

Today is School Lunch Hero Day! Check out the Chapter 568 heroes at Cuyamaca Outdoor School, Kim and Ana. Students presented the kitchen crew, who make breakfast, lunch AND dinner for students, with thank you notes and drawings. Thank you to all our SDCOE school lunch heroes!

Thank you to all our administrative professionals at San Diego County Office of Education! We love you and appreciate the work you do every day to support students, staff and programs.

Whether they work the front desk at an elementary school or manage files at the county office, school secretaries and other administrative professionals keep our schools running smoothly. These classified employees in the office do just about everything! They maintain attendance records, answer the phones, pay the bills and communicate with parents and administrators—all while keeping pace with advances in computer, telephone and document reproduction technology.
