We asked our Research Director, Vinay Udyawer, to share some tips on how to enjoy the ocean and how to avoid unwanted shark encounters.

Tip 1: Avoid swimming at dawn or dusk

Tip 2: Swim in patrolled areas (if possible)

Tip 3: Avoid areas that have larger shark prey, like seals

Tip 4: Avoid swimming after heavy rain

Making informed decisions means sharing the ocean with sharks rather than fearing them.

Dents and Tents | Day 2 | Part 1

BRUVS. DORIS. Drones.🦈
Day 2 of our Niue Denticles & Tentacles workshop was all about discovering the tools and technologies scientists use to study, monitor, and protect our ocean.

Using BRUVS (Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems), DORIS (Deep Ocean Research and Imaging System), and drones, students got a hands-on look at how marine research happens in the field using various technologies.

Students also put their species identification skills to the test with our Workshop Coordinator, Kirby, learning to identify some of the unique marine species that call Niue’s water home.
