This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice and the sacrifice of their families reminds us that freedom is never free.

Tuesday night, the City Council recognized the outstanding service and legacy of our San Clemente Lifeguard Department.

The Council issued a proclamation supporting National Beach Safety Week (May 18–25), while also recognizing two important milestones in 2026:

• The 95th anniversary of the founding of the San Clemente Lifeguard Department in July 1931

• 60 years of the City’s Junior Lifeguard program

The City Council also met the 2026 rookie lifeguard class, who recently completed 110 hours of training in ocean rescue, first aid, and other critical public safety skills they’ll use this summer.

We’re grateful for the professionalism, dedication, and service of our lifeguards who help keep our beaches safe every day.

We’re proud to see San Clemente lifeguards Alex Higginson and Andrew Mansoor featured in the latest edition of the San Clemente Journal.

During their offseason, Alex and Andrew took their skills abroad — serving, training, and learning alongside lifeguards in Australia and New Zealand. From rescue techniques and water safety outreach to experiencing different beach cultures, they brought home valuable knowledge and a deeper perspective on ocean safety.

Their commitment reflects the spirit of San Clemente lifeguarding:
always learning, always serving, and always striving to protect others.

A huge congratulations to Alex and Andrew for representing San Clemente so well both at home and abroad.

A huge thank you to San Clemente dentist Dr. James Sorge of for his generous support of The Rescue sculpture project.

Today, a few of our San Clemente Lifeguard & Junior Guard Foundation board members had the opportunity to personally thank Dr. Sorge and his incredible team at their office. We’re so grateful for their belief in this project and in preserving San Clemente’s unique lifeguard history and culture.

Thanks to supporters like Dr. Sorge, our community has now contributed and pledged more than $200,000 toward our $300,000 goal to bring The Rescue to life.
