Primarily Primates Primarily Primates is a non-profit primate refuge in San Antonio, Texas. PPI has been managed by Friends of Animals since May 2007.

Primarily Primates is a Better Business Bureau Accredited Charity. Primarily Primates is a non-profit sanctuary in Bexar County, Texas that operates to house, protect and rehabilitate 300-plus rescued primates and other animals. The 78 acre refuge has been managed by Friends of Animals since 2007, and focuses primarily on caring for apes, monkeys, lemurs and birds. Many are cast-offs from the pet trade, circuses, zoos and biomedical research institutions. Individuals released to the refuge include chimpanzees once used in space training and testing protocols by the United States Air Force, and Oliver, a chimpanzee once paraded on television shows as the "humanzee" due to a habit of walking upright. Primarily Primates was incorporated in 1981. Its current board, structured in 2007 under an agreement with the Attorney General of the State of Texas, includes the president of the animal-advocacy group Friends of Animals.

THANK YOU to everyone who helped us surpass our Giving Day for Apes goal. We set out to fundraise $40,000 to help our elderly chimps age gracefully, and with the help of 224 donors, we raised $43,771—our new record!

Your generosity is a beautiful reminder of the community behind these chimps. Because of you, their golden years will be even brighter and filled with comfort, companionship, and the ability to choose how they spend their days.

A special shoutout to Tito’s Vodka, an anonymous supporter in honor of Shu Shu, and Danger Dog Films for their matching gifts throughout the day.

We couldn’t do it without you!

We’re bringing Giving Day for Apes to Elsewhere Too! Come say hi, learn more about Primarily Primates and help support the chimps who call our sanctuary home. 💛🌿

Cheetah and Shu Shu are trying out a new form of enrichment at Primarily Primates! Enrichment is part of every day here, giving our chimps new ways to explore, play, problem-solve and make choices, especially as they enter their golden years.

Your Giving Day donation helps us continue providing enrichment, specialized care and everything our chimps need to thrive.

💥 Our SECOND POWER HOUR is happening NOW from 6–7 p.m. (EDT)! The sanctuary with the most unique donors during the hour wins additional prize money, so every person who gives helps increase our chances!

Can’t give during Power Hour? Giving Day for Apes continues until midnight, so there’s still plenty of time to help us reach our $40,000 goal! 🫶

Who’s helping us fund our next enclosure modification?!

Ramps and handholds can make all the difference for an aging chimp who has a harder time climbing and getting around.
Every donation gets us closer to another enclosure modification.

WE'RE MORE THAN HALFWAY THERE 🎉 We've reached more than half of our Giving Day for Apes goal! That means more vet care, medications, nutritious food and enclosure modifications for our senior chimps as they enjoy the golden years they fought so hard to reach. We're not done yet. LET'S GET THEM ALL THE WAY THERE!

As chimps age they can develop heart conditions, joint problems and pain, just like us. They need specialized exams, procedures and equipment to keep them healthy. One vet visit can cost up to $3500. Any amount helps us cover the cost: https://www.givingdayforapes.org/story/shu-shu

We’re racing toward our $40,000 goal, and you can watch your donations add up! Each icon represents the cost of something our aging chimps need, from medications and supplements to vet visits and accessibility improvements. Every time we raise enough to cover one, we’ll be turning that icon GOLD. Stay tuned for updates!
