💬 It’s Teen Talk Tuesday with Project LIGHT!

What's one quality you think is most important in a friendship: trust, honesty, loyalty, kindness, or respect?

Not everyone who calls themselves a friend acts like one. A real friend isn't perfect, but they make you feel valued, respected, and safe.

There are several signs you can look for to tell if someone is a real friend: they respect your boundaries, they support you whether you are online or offline, and you can be yourself around them.

Here are some red flags you should watch for in relationships:
- They pressure you to keep secrets from trusted adults.
- They make you feel guilty for spending time with others.
- They constantly put you down, embarrass you, or manipulate you.
- They only reach out when they want something.

Remember that the best friendships help you become a better version of yourself—not someone you're pretending to be.

Teen challenge this week: Think about one friend who consistently encourages, respects, and supports you. Send them a text or tell them thank you this week.

Most online grooming doesn’t start on dating apps. What we've found at Project LIGHT is that it starts in games.

Parent Tips:

Turn off private chat when possible.
Teach kids never to move conversations to another app.
Keep gaming systems in shared spaces.

💬 It’s Teen Talk Tuesday with Project LIGHT!

What's harder: saying "no" or worrying about what people will think after you say it?

Unfortunately, many teens know what the right choice is, but they worry about what others will think. Peer pressure is not easy to navigate as a teen, so how can teens handle this pressure?

1. Plan responses ahead of time.

Teens should think of the way they would respond to peers if they feel pressured. It's okay to have a short response. Long explanations are not owed to anyone—whether it's to a peer or to a stranger online. Simple answers like "I'm good," "That's not my thing," "Maybe later," or "I'm not interested" work perfectly.

2. Find your people.

Teens should seek out those who are truly their "people." Real friends respect boundaries. If someone only likes you when you do what they want, that's not a healthy friendship.

3. Trust yourself.

Confidence means making choices based on your values, not someone else's expectations.

Teen challenge this week: Think of one situation where you've felt pressured to do something you didn't want to do. What is one response you could use next time?

Many victims are recruited through manipulation, deception, coercion, or someone they KNOW AND TRUST. Trafficking often begins with relationship-building, not abduction.
